In Gujarat, the 'No Bag Day' initiative was introduced in some schools to alleviate the physical burden on students, allowing them to engage in vocational training instead. In rural areas, children often walk long distances to school. A 'bhāre daphtar' is a much more significant physical challenge for them than for urban students who use buses. For the urban middle class, the heavy bag is a status symbol of sorts—the more books, the 'better' the school, leading to a paradox of complaining while demanding more homework.
