तेज हवा

Using this phrase is easier than holding an umbrella in a storm. The most common way to use it is with the verb चलना (to move/walk). In Hindi, we say the wind is "walking" when it is blowing. So, you will say तेज हवा चल रही है (strong wind is blowing/walking). Remember that हवा is a feminine noun, so the verb ends in रही है. If you want to say "there was a strong wind," you say तेज हवा चल रही थी. You can also use it as a simple descriptor: बाहर बहुत तेज हवा है (There is very strong wind outside). If you are texting a friend about why your voice sounds muffled on a call, just blame the तेज हवा. It is a very flexible collocation that fits into almost any casual or semi-formal conversation about the weather.

Imagine you are trying to film a TikTok dance in the park. Suddenly, your tripod tips over and your hair goes everywhere. You look at the camera and say, "Guys, आज बहुत तेज हवा है!" (Guys, it's really windy today!). Or maybe you are sitting in a Zoom meeting and a door slams loudly in the background. You quickly unmute and apologize: "Sorry, तेज हवा की वजह से दरवाजा बंद हो गया" (Sorry, the door closed because of the strong wind). You will also see this in news headlines or weather apps. You should pull this phrase out whenever the wind becomes noticeable enough to mention. If you are standing on a beach and your scarf is flying away, use it. If you are at a hill station like Shimla and the cold wind is piercing through your jacket, use it. It is perfect for making small talk with neighbors or complaining to your roommate about the dust coming in through the window. Use it when you are giving someone a heads-up about the weather: "Wear a jacket, बाहर तेज हवा है." It is also great for dramatic effect in stories—nothing sets the mood for a ghost story like आधी रात को तेज हवा चल रही थी (Strong wind was blowing at midnight). It is a neutral, everyday term that works perfectly in almost any social setting.

Don't use तेज to describe "strong" things that aren't fast or sharp. For example, if you want to say someone is physically strong, don't call them तेज इंसान (that would mean they are smart or fast). Use ताकतवर instead. Also, don't use it for "strong" coffee or tea; that is कड़क (kadak). If you are talking about a powerful emotional bond, तेज won't work there either. Similarly, if the wind is so destructive that it's uprooting trees and destroying houses, तेज हवा might sound a bit too polite. In those cases, you’d upgrade to तूफ़ान (storm). It is also not the right word for a gentle, pleasant breeze; for that, we use ठंडी हवा or सुहानी हवा. Basically, if it doesn't make a "whoosh" sound, तेज might be overkill.

Learners often try to translate "strong" literally from English. You might be tempted to say मजबूत हवा (majboot hawa), but please don't! मजबूत is for strong walls, strong chairs, or strong muscles. If you say मजबूत हवा, a native speaker might imagine a wind made of concrete. Another common slip-up is using भारी हवा (heavy wind). While we have "heavy rain" in English, in Hindi, wind is never "heavy." Here are the quick fixes:

For a sudden gust of wind, you can say हवा का झोंका (hawa ka jhonka). It's a very romantic phrase often used in Bollywood movies when the hero first sees the heroine. If the wind is carrying a lot of dust (common in North India), you’d call it आंधी (aandhi). And if the wind is freezing cold, you might just say सर्द हवा (sard hawa). While तेज हवा is the bread and butter of weather talk, these variations can help you add a bit of spice and precision to your Hindi vocabulary.

You will often hear people add intensifiers to this phrase. बहुत तेज हवा (very strong wind) is probably the most common. If it's a bit too much, you might hear काफी तेज हवा (quite strong wind). In some regions, people might say जोर की हवा (zor ki hawa), which emphasizes the force or power behind the wind. You can also describe the temperature along with the speed: ठंडी तेज हवा (cold strong wind) or गर्म तेज हवा (hot strong wind). If you're talking about the direction, you could say पहाड़ों से तेज हवा आ रही है (Strong wind is coming from the mountains). These variations allow you to describe exactly what kind of windy situation you're stuck in.

Is तेज हवा always bad? Not at all! In the middle of a scorching Indian summer, a तेज हवा can be a huge relief, especially if it's a bit cool. Can I use it for a fan? Yes, if your ceiling fan is on the highest setting, you can say पंखे की हवा बहुत तेज है. Is it formal? It's neutral. You can use it with your boss, your grandma, or the guy at the tea stall. Does it mean a storm? Not necessarily. A storm involves rain or lightning; तेज हवा is just the wind part. If you're by the sea, is it still तेज हवा? Absolutely, though you might also call it a समुद्री हवा (sea breeze) if it's pleasant, but if it's knocking over your coconut water, it's definitely तेज!
