The Role of Context in Interpreting Agentless Sentences
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
In Armenian, the 'doer' is often hidden; context tells you if it's 'everyone,' 'the government,' or 'that guy we hate.'
- Use 3rd person plural for general actions: `Ասում են...` (They say/It is said).
- Use passive `-վ-` to focus on the result: `Հարցը լուծվեց` (The issue was solved).
- Identify the agent via preceding sentences or shared cultural knowledge.

Meanings
Agentless sentences are constructions where the grammatical subject (the doer) is omitted, requiring the listener to use pragmatic context, prior discourse, or social hierarchy to identify who is performing the action.
General/Universal Agent
Referring to people in general or a collective societal norm.
“Այսպես չեն վարվում: (One doesn't behave like this.)”
“Օրենքը պետք է հարգել: (The law must be respected.)”
Institutional/Authoritative Agent
The agent is an organization, government, or authority figure, omitted to sound objective or formal.
“Որոշումն ընդունվեց միաձայն: (The decision was adopted unanimously.)”
“Ճանապարհը փակել են: (They [the authorities] have closed the road.)”
Evasive/Polite Agent
Intentionally hiding the doer to avoid blame or to be tactful.
“Բաժակը կոտրվեց: (The glass got broken [I won't say I did it].)”
“Սխալ է թույլ տրվել: (A mistake has been made.)”
Discourse-Linked Agent
The agent was mentioned in a previous sentence and is now dropped for brevity.
“Տնօրենը եկավ: Հրամայեց սկսել: (The director came. [He] ordered to start.)”
“Նրանք խոստացան ու չարեցին: (They promised and didn't do [it].)”
