な-Adjectives: Japanese Adjectives That Need な

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Na-adjectives describe nouns and require the particle 'na' when placed directly before a noun.

  • Use 'na' before a noun: {静か|しずか}な{部屋|へや} (a quiet room).
  • Drop 'na' and use 'desu' at the end: {部屋|へや}は{静か|しずか}です (The room is quiet).
  • Use 'ja arimasen' for negative: {静か|しずか}ではありません (It is not quiet).
Na-Adjective + な + Noun OR Noun + は + Na-Adjective + です

نظرة عامة

な-adjectives (na-adjectives) are the second type of Japanese adjective. Unlike い-adjectives, they do not conjugate on their own — instead they behave more like nouns and use です/じゃない for conjugation. The defining feature is that they need な when placed before a noun: きれいな人 (pretty person), 静かな部屋 (quiet room), 有名な人 (famous person).
Common な-adjectives include: きれい (pretty/clean), 静か (quiet), 有名 (famous), 元気 (energetic/healthy), 好き (liked/favorite), 嫌い (disliked), 上手 (skilled), 下手 (unskilled), 大切 (important), 簡単 (simple), 大変 (tough), 便利 (convenient). For conjugation, な-adjectives use the copula: Present: 静かです (it is quiet). Negative: 静かじゃないです or 静かではありません (it is not quiet).
Past: 静かでした (it was quiet). Past negative: 静かじゃなかったです (it was not quiet). A key trap for learners: some words look like い-adjectives but are actually な-adjectives — きれい (pretty) and 嫌い (dislike) both end in い but require な before nouns.
The telltale sign is that their い is part of the word stem, not a conjugatable ending.
