المعنى
Stating your preference to leave.
خلفية ثقافية
Dutch people value their 'me-time' and are very direct. Saying you'd rather go home is not seen as an insult to the host, but as a sign of self-awareness. Flemish culture is slightly more indirect than Dutch culture. While the phrase is understood, they might add more 'softeners' like 'Ik denk dat ik...' (I think that I...). In Surinamese Dutch, social gatherings often last very long. Leaving early by saying you'd 'rather go home' might be met with more playful resistance or 'nengre' (teasing). Many expats find this phrase liberating once they realize they don't have to make up elaborate excuses to leave a Dutch 'borrel'.
The 'Liever' Rule
Always use 'liever' when you have two options and you prefer one. It's much more natural than saying 'Ik prefer...'.
Don't Over-explain
In the Netherlands, you don't need a long excuse. 'Ik ga liever naar huis' is often enough.
