However vs. How-ever: ¿Cuál es la diferencia?

Usa however para decir 'pero' con elegancia y how ever para preguntar '¿pero cómo?!' con asombro.

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use 'however' as one word for contrast or degree, but use 'how ever' as two words for surprised questions.

  • Use 'however' (one word) to mean 'but' or 'nevertheless' in a sentence: 'I'm tired; however, I'll go.'
  • Use 'however' (one word) before adjectives to mean 'to whatever extent': 'However hard I try, I fail.'
  • Use 'how ever' (two words) to show extreme surprise in a question: 'How ever did you find me?'

Overview

### Overview
### How This Grammar Works
Aunque suenan igual, pertenecen a categorías distintas.
1. However (Una sola palabra)
* *Ejemplo:* I wanted to go to the beach. However, it started to rain.
no importa cómo
o
de la manera que sea
* *Ejemplo:* You can decorate the room however you like.
2. How ever (Dos palabras)
* *Ejemplo:* How ever did you find my keys?
|---|---|---|
| Contraste (Formal) | Punto (.) + However + Coma (,) | The project was difficult. However, we finished it. |
| Contraste (Fluido) | Punto y coma (;) + however + coma (,) | He is very talented; however, he lacks discipline. |
| Modo/Grado | However + Adjetivo/Adverbio | However hard I try, I can't remember his name. |
| Énfasis (Pregunta) | How ever + Verbo Auxiliar + Sujeto | How ever did you manage to get those tickets? |
Puedes decir: It was, however, a very expensive car.
### When To Use It
¿Cuándo usar however?
But your report is wrong
(que suena muy agresivo), dices: Your report is very detailed. However, some of the data needs to be updated.
However much money he has, he is never satisfied.
¿Cuándo usar how ever?
Tu reacción natural sería: How ever did you do that?!
I don't know how ever he survived.
.
* Incorrecto: I studied a lot, however I didn't pass.
* Correcto: I studied a lot; however, I didn't pass.
* ¿Por qué ocurre? En inglés, however es un adverbio, no una conjunción como but. No tiene la fuerza suficiente para unir dos oraciones independientes solo con una coma. Necesitas el punto y coma o el punto.
2. Confundir el énfasis con el contraste
* Incorrecto: How ever, I think we should wait.
* Correcto: However, I think we should wait.
* Consejo: En situaciones casuales, usa but.
* Incorrecto: How ever you fixed it?
* Correcto: How ever did you fix it?
### Contrast With Similar Patterns
However vs. But
| Característica | But | However |
|---|---|---|
| Formalidad | Informal / Neutral | Formal / Profesional |
How ever vs. How
* How did you do it?: Una pregunta simple. Quieres saber el método. (¿Cómo lo hiciste?).
* How ever did you do it?: Una pregunta cargada de emoción. No puedes creer que lo hiciera. (¿Pero cómo es posible que lo hicieras?).
However vs. Although
* Although it was cold, we went out. (Aunque hacía frío, salimos).
* It was cold. However, we went out. (Hacía frío. Sin embargo, salimos).
### Quick FAQ
Solo asegúrate de poner una coma justo después: However, the results were different.
O va todo junto (however) o va separado (how ever).
Por ejemplo: however expensive =
por muy caro que sea

Preguntas frecuentes (8)

Yes! It is perfectly fine to start a sentence with `However,` followed by a comma. It's a great way to transition between two separate sentences.

Technically, yes, when used for emphasis. However, in modern casual writing, many people use the one-word version. For exams or formal writing, use two words.

`But` is a conjunction that joins clauses with a comma. `However` is an adverb that needs a semicolon or a period.

When it's at the start of a sentence or after a semicolon, yes. When it's used for degree (e.g., `however hard`), it does not.

`Howsoever` is an old-fashioned, very formal version of `however`. You might see it in legal texts, but you shouldn't use it in daily life.

Because it acts like a conjunction (joining ideas) but it's grammatically an adverb (modifying the whole clause).

Yes. For example: 'You can dress however you want.' This is a common informal usage.

Spanish speakers often use a comma before `however` because `sin embargo` works that way in Spanish. In English, this is a 'comma splice' error.
