Este, Ese, Estos, Esos (This, That, These, Those)

Estas palabras mágicas te ayudan a señalar cosas. Recuerda: cerca o lejos, y uno o varios.

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use 'this' and 'these' for things close to you, and 'that' and 'those' for things further away.

  • Use 'this' for one thing nearby: 'This apple is sweet.'
  • Use 'that' for one thing far away: 'That car is fast.'
  • Use 'these' (near) and 'those' (far) for more than one item: 'Those stars are bright.'
☝️ (Near/1) This | ☝️☝️ (Near/2+) These | 👉 (Far/1) That | 👉👉 (Far/2+) Those

Overview

¿Alguna vez has intentado pedir un pastel específico en la vitrina de una panadería pero olvidaste el nombre? Probablemente solo señalaste y dijiste: Quiero ese. Hacemos esto todos los días.
Señalar es el truco humano definitivo para la comunicación. En inglés, usamos cuatro palabras especiales llamadas demostrativos para señalar por nosotros. Estas palabras son this, that, these y those.
Son tus mejores amigos cuando compras en línea, envías mensajes a amigos sobre un TikTok raro o presentas a tu compañero de cuarto a tus padres. Sin ellos, pasarías demasiado tiempo describiendo cosas. Imagina decir
The phone that is currently in my hand is ringing
en lugar de simplemente
This phone is ringing
.
Sonarías como un robot de una película de ciencia ficción de los 70.
Los demostrativos nos dicen dos cosas: dónde está algo y cuántas cosas hay. Piensa en ellos como un GPS para tus oraciones. Rastrean la distancia entre tú (el hablante) y el objeto.
Si puedes tocarlo, usualmente es this. Si tienes que cruzar la habitación para agarrarlo, probablemente sea that. También manejan las matemáticas.
El inglés es muy exigente con el singular y el plural. No puedes usar la misma palabra para una pizza que la que usas para cinco pizzas. Es un sistema simple, pero es la base para ser entendido en el mundo real.
Ya sea que estés en una entrevista de trabajo o simplemente pasando el rato en Discord, estas cuatro palabras hacen el trabajo pesado.

How This Grammar Works

    This week is crazy!
Las cosas que pasaron en el pasado usan that.
That party last Saturday was legendary.
  • Emotional Distance: A veces, usamos that para distanciarnos de algo que no nos gusta. "I don't like that guy's vibe.
    Se siente más lejos que
this guy", quien podría estar parado justo a tu lado.
¿Qué tal un chiste? ¿Por qué el estudiante señaló el plato vacío? ¡Porque quería that sándwich invisible! Ok, me apegaré a la gramática.

Formation Pattern

1
Aprender las formas es como aprender un baile simple. Solo hay cuatro movimientos para recordar.
2
Singular + Near: Usa this. (Ejemplo: this laptop on my desk).
3
Singular + Far: Usa that. (Ejemplo: that plane in the sky).
4
Plural + Near: Usa these. (Ejemplo: these notifications on my screen).
5
Plural + Far: Usa those. (Ejemplo: those mountains in the distance).

A diferencia de idiomas como el francés o el español, a los demostrativos en inglés no les importa el género. No necesitas preocuparte si una mesa es masculina o femenina. Solo te importa si hay una mesa o una sala de exposición de IKEA completa de ellas.

When To Use It

Usarás estos en todas partes. Veamos algunos escenarios modernos.
  • On the Phone: Cuando contestas una llamada de un número desconocido, dices:
    Hello, this is [Tu Nombre]
. Para preguntar quién llama, dices:
    Who is that?
  • Social Media: Si estás compartiendo un meme en un chat grupal, podrías escribir:
    This is so me!
  • Online Shopping: ¿Navegando en Amazon? Podrías decirle a tu compañero de cuarto: "I really want those headphones, but they're so expensive."
  • Introducing People: Cuando estás en una fiesta, señalas a tu amigo y dices:
    This is Sarah
. No dices She is Sarah cuando la presentas por primera vez en un espacio físico.
  • Ordering Food: ¿En un camión de comida? Señala el menú y di: "I'll have this taco and that burrito, please."
Pro-tip: Si estás viajando y no sabes la palabra para pulpo en un mercado local, solo señala y di
That, please.
Salva vidas (y hambre).

Common Mistakes

Aunque es gramática A1, la gente se equivoca todo el tiempo.
  1. 1Mixing Singular and Plural: Este es el error #1. La gente dice
    this shoes
    en lugar de
    these shoes
. Recuerda: this es un solitario (singular). these ama una multitud (plural).
  2. 2The It Trap: Usar it cuando deberías usar this. Si estás introduciendo un concepto o iniciando una conversación, comienza con this.
    This is a great idea!
    es mejor que
    It is a great idea!
cuando la estás presentando por primera vez.
  3. 3Pronunciation: this ('i' corta como en 'fish') y these ('e' larga como en 'cheese'). Si los dices mal, la gente podría confundirse sobre de cuántos artículos estás hablando.
  4. 4Overusing That: No uses that para cosas que estás sosteniendo actualmente. Suena como si tuvieras miedo del objeto.
    ¿What is that?
(señalando tu propia mano) suena como si hubieras encontrado un bicho. Usa
    ¿What is this?

Contrast With Similar Patterns

¿En qué se diferencian de otras palabras señaladoras como it, here, y there?

This/That vs. It: this y that son más específicos. Señalan una cosa específica en el espacio. it es más general y se usa una vez que ya sabemos de qué estamos hablando.
Look at this dog! It is so cute.
(Usa this para señalar, luego it para seguir hablando).
This/That vs. Here/There: here y there son adverbios de lugar. No reemplazan al sustantivo; describen la ubicación.
My phone is here.
(Ubicación)
This is my phone.
(Identificación)
These vs. Those in stories: Al contar una historia, these se siente como si los eventos estuvieran sucediendo ahora mismo. those se siente como los viejos tiempos.

Quick FAQ

Q

¿Puedo usar this para personas?

¡Sí! Pero principalmente para presentaciones o identificar a alguien en una foto.

This is my brother.

Q

¿Siempre tengo que usar un sustantivo después de ellos?

Nop. Pueden estar solos como pronombres.

I like this.
o pueden ser adjetivos:
I like this song.

Q

¿Es grosero señalar?

¡En algunas culturas, sí! Pero usar las palabras this y that es perfectamente cortés. Solo tal vez usa toda tu mano en lugar de un dedo si estás en un restaurante elegante.

Memory Trick

¡Piensa en las letras!

- THIS tiene una I. Solo hay 1 I. Así que this es para 1 cosa.

- THESE tiene muchas Es. Es para cosas Extra (plural).

- THAT y THOSE? Si empieza con T-H y es larga, está lejos. (Ok, esa es un poco forzada, ¡pero oye, podría funcionarte!)

Preguntas frecuentes (8)

Yes, but mainly for introductions like `This is my friend` or on the phone. In other cases, use `he` or `she`.

We use `this` for the present or future (`this week`) and `that` for the past (`that year`).

English requires subject-verb agreement. `This` is singular, so it needs `is`. `These` is plural, so it needs `are`.

It is always `that's` with an apostrophe, which is short for `that is`.

Yes, `these ones` and `those ones` are very common in informal English to emphasize specific items.

Make sure the 'e' sound is long like in 'bee' and the 's' sounds like a 'z'.

Usually no. However, you might use it if you are referring to something the other person is holding.

No. In English, `this`, `that`, `these`, and `those` are the same for masculine, feminine, and neuter nouns.
