Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Czech uses the Latin alphabet with special marks called diacritics to represent unique sounds.

  • The 'háček' (ˇ) softens consonants: 's' becomes 'š' (sh).
  • The 'čárka' (´) lengthens vowels: 'a' becomes 'á' (aa).
  • The 'kroužek' (°) is only on 'ů' and sounds like 'oo'.
Letter + Diacritic = New Sound
