The čárka (´) over a vowel makes it sound twice as long, and it changes the meaning of words.
- A vowel with a čárka (á, é, í, ó, ú, ý) is held for twice the duration of a plain vowel.
- Vowel length is phonemic, meaning 'drahá' (expensive) is a completely different word than 'draha' (path).
- The čárka is not an accent for stress; it is a marker of duration only.
