Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

To turn a statement into a question in Bulgarian, simply add the particle 'ли' after the verb.

  • Add 'ли' immediately after the verb: 'Ти спиш ли?' (Are you sleeping?)
  • Keep the word order the same as the statement: 'Той яде ли?' (Is he eating?)
  • Use rising intonation at the end of the sentence to signal a question.

Meanings

The particle 'ли' is the primary tool for forming yes/no questions in Bulgarian. It transforms a declarative sentence into an interrogative one without changing the word order.
