Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Greek has only five distinct vowel sounds (a, e, i, o, u), and they are always crisp, clear, and never diphthongized.
- The vowel 'α' always sounds like the 'a' in 'father'. Example: 'γάλα' (gala).
- The vowel 'ε' and 'αι' both sound like the 'e' in 'met'. Example: 'ένα' (ena).
- The vowels 'ι', 'η', 'υ', 'ει', 'οι' all sound like the 'ee' in 'see'. Example: 'πίτα' (pita).
