Simile (تشبیه)، Metaphor (استعاره) و Analogy (تمثیل) هستند. برای یک فارسیزبان که در حال یادگیری زبان انگلیسی در سطح B1 است، درک تفاوت این سه بسیار حیاتی است، چرا که ساختار ذهنی ما در زبان فارسی برای تشبیه و استعاره بسیار غنی است، اما تفاوتهای ساختاری در انگلیسی میتواند باعث سردرگمی شود.Simile است. برای مثال وقتی میگوییم «مثل شیر شجاع است»، از ادات تشبیه استفاده میکنیم. اما در انگلیسی، استفاده از like یا as برای نشان دادن این شباهت، قواعد خاص خود را دارد.Metaphor یا «استعاره» در فارسی به معنای ادعای همانندی کامل است (مثلاً «او شیر میدان است»). تفاوت اصلی در این است که در انگلیسی، مرز بین این دو در نوشتار رسمی بسیار دقیقتر رعایت میشود.
