Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
In Lao, double negatives are used for emphasis, not to create a positive meaning.
- Use 'ບໍ່' (bor) before the verb to negate: 'ຂ້ອຍບໍ່ກິນ' (I don't eat).
- Add 'ບໍ່...ເລີຍ' (bor...ler) for 'not at all': 'ຂ້ອຍບໍ່ກິນເລີຍ' (I don't eat at all).
- Double negatives like 'ບໍ່ແມ່ນບໍ່' mean 'it is not that it isn't' (a subtle confirmation).
