Asking age is a sign of politeness and social awareness. It allows the speaker to use the correct kinship terms (Pii/Nong), which is essential for showing respect. Age is often associated with 'Bun' (merit). Elders are seen as having accumulated more merit and wisdom, hence the deep respect shown to them in ceremonies like the Baci. In Lao offices, age often trumps job title in terms of informal influence. An older junior employee might still be treated with more deference than a very young manager. Birth order and age are so important that siblings are often referred to by their order (e.g., 'Luk Kok' for the firstborn) rather than just their names.
