Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Swahili follows a strict Subject-Verb-Object order, just like English, making it very intuitive for beginners to start building sentences immediately.
- Subject comes first: 'Juma' (Juma) anasoma (reads) 'kitabu' (a book).
- Verb follows the subject: 'Wanafunzi' (Students) 'wanacheza' (are playing) 'mpira' (football).
- Object comes last: 'Mama' (Mother) 'anapika' (is cooking) 'chakula' (food).
Meanings
The SVO structure is the foundational building block of Swahili sentences, defining the relationship between the actor, the action, and the target.
Declarative Statements
Used to state facts or actions performed by a subject.
“Mwalimu anafundisha Kiswahili.”
“Baba anasoma gazeti.”
