Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Alif (ا) is the first letter of the Urdu alphabet, always written as a straight vertical line.

  • Alif never connects to the letter following it: 'ا ب' (ab).
  • Alif always connects to the letter preceding it if it is a connector: 'با' (ba).
  • Alif represents the 'a' sound like in 'father' or 'cat' depending on context.
