Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Vietnamese words end in only 8 specific consonants: m, n, p, t, c, ch, ng, and nh.

  • Nasals: Words ending in 'm', 'n', 'ng', or 'nh' are soft and resonant (e.g., 'nam').
  • Stops: Words ending in 'p', 't', 'c', or 'ch' are 'cut off' abruptly (e.g., 'bát').
  • No others: If you see a word ending in 's', 'r', or 'l', it is likely a loanword or error.
