Passé Simple Négatif : Dire 'Non' au Passé (didn't)

Pour les actions passées que tu n'as pas faites, pense toujours : "didn't« + »verbe de base".

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use 'didn't' plus the base verb to say something didn't happen in the past. Never add -ed to the main verb!

  • Use 'didn't' for all subjects (I, you, he, she, it, we, they). Example: 'I didn't go.'
  • The main verb stays in its base form. Example: 'She didn't eat' (NOT 'didn't ate').
  • The verb 'to be' is the only exception; it uses 'wasn't' or 'weren't' instead.

Overview

On ne peut pas dire I wented not ou I not went.

How This Grammar Works

Ça marche de la même façon pour tous les sujets — I, you, he, she, it, we et they. Plus besoin de s'inquiéter d'ajouter un s ou de changer les terminaisons selon qui parle !
2
Commence par ton Subject (la personne ou la chose qui fait l'action).
3
Ajoute l'auxiliaire didn't (ou did not pour les situations plus formelles).
4
Ajoute la Base Form du verbe (pas de -ed, pas de changements irréguliers).
5
Termine avec le reste de tes informations.
6
Form | Example | Translation
7
--- | --- | ---
8
Full Form | I did not see the message. | Je n'ai pas vu le message.
9
Contraction | You didn't like the photo. | Tu n'as pas aimé la photo.
10
Third Person | She didn't call me back. | Elle ne m'a pas rappelé.
11
Plural | They didn't arrive on time. | Ils ne sont pas arrivés à l'heure.
12
The Big Exception: The Verb 'To Be'
13
Le verbe to be est un peu un rebelle. Il n'aime pas les aides. Il n'utilise pas did. À la place, il ajoute juste not à ses formes passées : was et were.
14
I wasn't (I was not)
15
You weren't (You were not)
16
He/She/It wasn't (He/She/It was not)
17
We/They weren't (We/They were not)
18
Si tu essaies de dire "I didn't be", une fée de la grammaire perd ses ailes. S'il te plaît, pense aux fées.

When To Use It

Tu utiliseras cette structure dès que tu parleras d'actions terminées dans le passé qui ne se sont pas produites. C'est hyper important pour la vie de tous les jours. Imagine que tu es en entretien d'embauche sur Zoom et qu'on te demande si tu as déjà utilisé un logiciel spécifique.
Tu pourrais dire : "I didn't use that specific tool, but I learned a similar one.
Ou peut-être que tu expliques un raté dans un vlog de voyage :
We didn't find the hidden beach, but we found a great taco stand!" On l'utilise pour :
  • Expliquer des absences : "I didn't come to the party because I was tired."
  • Corriger une information : "No, I didn't say that in the WhatsApp group."
  • Décrire des habitudes qui ont changé : "I didn't use to like sushi, but now I love it!" (Note : utilise didn't use to pour les habitudes passées).
  • Donner un avis : "The movie was okay, but I didn't like the ending."
  • Réseaux sociaux : "I didn't post any stories yesterday because I was off the grid."

Common Mistakes

  1. 1The Double Past : C'est l'erreur n°1. Les gens disent "I didn't went ou He didn't called". Rappelle-toi la règle de l'aimant ! did a déjà volé le passé.
  • ✗ I didn't saw the movie.
  • ✓ I didn't see the movie.
  1. 1Confondre 'didn't' avec 'wasn't' : N'utilise pas didn't avec des adjectifs ou des lieux qui nécessitent le verbe to be.
  • ✗ I didn't happy yesterday.
  • ✓ I wasn't happy yesterday.
  • ✗ They didn't at the gym.
  • ✓ They weren't at the gym.
  1. 1Oublier 'did' complètement : Parfois, les apprenants disent juste I not go. Ça marche dans certaines langues, mais en anglais, tu as besoin de cette aide did pour faire le pont.
  2. 2L'orthographe de 'didn't' : Fais gaffe à l'apostrophe ! Elle se place entre le n et le t (là où se trouvait le o de not). Ce n'est pas did'nt ou didnt'.

Contrast With Similar Patterns

En quoi est-ce différent du Present Simple negative ? Au présent, on utilise don't ou doesn't.
  • Present : "I don't like pizza." (Toujours/Maintenant)
  • Past : "I didn't like the pizza." (Celle d'hier en particulier)
Et pour le Past Continuous negative ? Utilise-le pour des actions qui étaient en cours sur une certaine durée.
  • Past Simple : "I didn't watch the game." (Le match entier est un événement terminé).
  • Past Continuous : "I wasn't watching the game when you called." (Je n'étais pas en train de le regarder à ce moment précis).
Si tu veux te la jouer un peu plus, tu peux comparer avec never.
  • "I didn't go to Paris." (Un voyage spécifique)
  • I never went to Paris.
(De toute ma vie — c'est plus dramatique !)

Quick FAQ

Q

Est-ce que je peux utiliser did not au lieu de didn't dans un message ?

Tu peux, mais ça fait très sérieux. Comme si t'étais un robot ou que t'étais vraiment en colère. Reste sur didn't avec tes potes !

Q

On dit "didn't use to ou didn't used to" ?

Grammaticalement, c'est didn't use to à cause de la règle de l'aimant de did. Cependant, beaucoup de natifs ajoutent le d à l'écrit informel parce que la prononciation est la même. Pour un exam, n'oublie pas d'enlever le d !

Q

Est-ce que didn't change pour 'he' ou 'she' ?

Non ! L'anglais a enfin décidé de faire simple ici. I didn't, she didn't, they didn't — c'est la fête du taille unique.

Q

Pourquoi on utilise 'did' de toute façon ?

C'est ce qu'on appelle le do-support. Les verbes anglais sont un peu feignants et ont besoin d'une aide pour porter le poids de la négation et des questions. Vois did comme l'assistant personnel du verbe.

FAQ (8)

No. You must use the base form 'go'. 'Didn't' already shows the past tense, so you don't need to change the main verb. Say `I didn't go`.

'Didn't' is a contraction used in speaking and casual writing. 'Did not' is more formal and used for emphasis. For example, `I did not do it!` sounds much stronger than `I didn't do it.`

No. The verb 'to be' is special. You just add 'not' to 'was' or 'were' to make `wasn't` or `weren't`. Never say `didn't was`.

Yes! One of the best things about the past simple negative is that `didn't` is used for all subjects: I, you, he, she, it, we, they.

Yes, you can use 'never' to mean 'not once'. For example, `I never saw that movie.` However, 'didn't' is more common for specific events.

In English, most verbs cannot be made negative by themselves. They need a 'helping' (auxiliary) verb. 'Do' is the helper we use for the simple tenses.

Yes! It works for both regular (didn't walk) and irregular (didn't run) verbs. The main verb always stays in the base form.

Most native speakers don't pronounce the 't' clearly. It sounds more like `did-un`. The tongue stops the air for the 't' but doesn't always release it.
