Smart Tips
Think of the word 'SAYDI'. It sounds like 'said', but it means 'if it was'. Just add 'mi' to turn it into a question.
Look at the very last vowel of the verb. If it's 'ı' or 'a', use 'mı'. It's a perfect mirror.
Combine this with 'kaş ki' (if only) to ask deep questions about the past.
Don't panic! Just find the root and start stacking. Root + sa + y + di + person + mi. It's like Lego bricks.
発音
Stress on the Conditional
The primary stress usually falls on the conditional suffix '-sa/-sə', not the question particle.
The 'y' Glide
The 'y' in '-saydı' is a smooth glide, not a hard 'y'.

文化メモ
Using unreal conditionals is a polite way to offer help you couldn't give: 'Bilsəydim, gələrdimmi?' implies you definitely would have helped.
Azerbaijani poetry (like Fuzuli) often uses these forms to express the 'impossible love' or 'destiny' that could have been.
People often avoid too many 'what if' questions about bad events, as it's seen as 'calling' bad luck, but they are common for positive fantasies.
The conditional '-sa' is ancient Turkic. The '-idi' copula comes from the Old Turkic 'er-di' (was).

Yes, you can add `əgər` (if) at the beginning for emphasis, but the verb must still have the `-saydı` suffix. Example: `Əgər gəlsəydi, görərdinmi?`
In modern orthography, it is written as a separate word, but in speech and older texts, it's treated as a suffix. Always follow vowel harmony regardless.
`Gəlsəydimi` focuses on the condition ('Had he come?'), while `Gələrdimi` focuses on the result ('Would he have come?'). They are often used together in one sentence.
Add the negative suffix `-ma/-mə` before the conditional: `Gəlməsəydimmi?` (Would I not have come?).
No, this specific form is for 'unreal' situations, usually in the past. For future 'if' questions, use the simple conditional `Gəlsə?`.
Very common! Azerbaijanis love discussing hypothetical scenarios and alternative outcomes in daily life.
It's a buffer consonant that prevents two vowels ('a' from '-sa' and 'i' from 'idi') from clashing.
Trying to use a word for 'would' instead of the suffix. Remember, the 'would' is inside the `-ydı` suffix!
