後悔と結果:「Would Have」の使い方
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use 'would have' to talk about things that didn't happen in the past and imagine their results.
- Use 'would have' + past participle for hypothetical past results: 'I would have called you.'
- Contract 'would have' to 'would've' in speech, but never write 'would of'.
- Use 'wouldn't have' for things that happened but you wish didn't: 'I wouldn't have gone.'
Overview
would have + 過去分詞 の形です。日本語では「〜していただろうに」「〜だったはずだ」という一言で済ませてしまうことが多いですが、英語ではこの形を使いこなすことで、単なる過去の事実の報告を超えた、非常に高度で繊細なニュアンスを伝えることが可能になります。would have なのです。would have + 過去分詞の基本的な仕組みを理解するために、まずは日本語の構造と比較してみましょう。would(推測・意志の助動詞)に have + 過去分詞(完了形)を組み合わせるという独特のルールを使います。- 1事実に反する(Counterfactual): その出来事は実際には起こりませんでした。
- 2過去に固定されている(Past-bound): その可能性はすでに過ぎ去った過去のものです。
If I had seen him, I would have said hello. という文を見てみましょう。事実は「彼に会わなかった(I didn't see him)」、だから「挨拶もしなかった(I didn't say hello)」のです。 Subject + would + have + Past ParticipleSubject + would have + P.P. | I would have helped you. (助けたのに。) |Subject + would not have + P.P. | It wouldn't have mattered. (関係なかっただろう。) |Would + Subject + have + P.P.? | Would you have gone? (あなたなら行った?) |I would have→I'd haveまたはI'd'vewould not have→wouldn't have
I'd have は、速い会話では「アイドゥヴ」のように聞こえます。また、否定形の wouldn't have は「ウッドゥントゥヴ」となります。この音の変化に慣れていないと、ネイティブが何と言ったのか聞き取れないことがよくあります。if を省略して had を文頭に出す「倒置」が使われることがあります。この場合も、結果を表す would have の形は変わりません。- 標準:
If I had known, I would have acted. - 倒置:
Had I known, I would have acted.(知っていたならば、行動していただろう。)
If the train had arrived on time, I would have made it to the meeting.
I would have bought that jacket, but it was too expensive.
She didn't see the sign. Otherwise, she would have stopped.
should have よりも少し遠回しで、客観的なニュアンスが含まれることがあります。A professional would have checked the data twice.
I would have called you back, but my battery died.
would have been + 現在分詞 (-ing) を使うことで、過去のある時点で「〜している最中だっただろう」という躍動感のある推測ができます。If it hadn't rained, we would have been playing tennis at that time.
would of と書いてしまう(音の勘違い)would've(短縮形)の発音が would of と酷似しているため、書き言葉で of を使ってしまう人がいます。しかし、of は前置詞であり、助動詞の後に来ることは絶対にありません。必ず have を使いましょう。- Incorrect:
I would of gone. - Correct:
I would have gone.
if 節の中に would have を入れてしまう(ダブル would)if の中にも would を入れたくなります。しかし、英語のルールでは if 節は had + 過去分詞、帰結節が would have + 過去分詞 と役割分担が決まっています。- Incorrect:
If I would have known, I would have told you. - Correct:
If I had known, I would have told you.
would have と should have の混同I would have done it.= もし条件が揃えば、私はやっただろう。(事実の推測)I should have done it.= 私はそれをすべきだったのに、しなかった。
I would have helped him.(条件さえあれば、私は彼を助けた。) - 2
I could have helped him.(彼を助ける能力も機会もあった。でも実際には助けなかった。) - 3
I should have helped him.(彼を助けるべきだった。助けなかったことを後悔している。)
would have と would はどう使い分けますか?I would buy it. は「(今お金があれば)買うのに」という現在の仮定です。I would have bought it. は「(あの時お金があれば)買ったのに」という過去の仮定です。過去の話をしている時は必ず have + 過去分詞をセットにしてください。would've と短縮してもいいですか?would have とフルで書くのがマナーです。一方で、社内のチャットや親しい同僚とのやり取りであれば、短縮形の方が自然で「こなれた」印象を与えます。If I had... ではなく If I would have... と言っているネイティブをたまに見かけますが?If I had... Conjugating 'Would Have'

'Would have' means you intended to do it but something stopped you. 'Could have' means you had the ability or opportunity to do it, but you didn't necessarily try.
No, never. It is always a mistake. It only exists because 'would've' sounds like 'would of' when spoken quickly.
Yes! We often use it alone when the 'if' part is obvious. For example: 'I would have called you (if I had known you were home).'
'Woulda' is the phonetic spelling of the very casual pronunciation of 'would have'. It is common in songs and informal texting but should be avoided in writing.
The negative is 'would not have' or the contraction 'wouldn't have'. Example: 'I wouldn't have known if you hadn't told me.'
Yes, but it changes the meaning. 'Would have' is certain (100% result), while 'might have' is uncertain (maybe 50% result).
No. 'Would have' is strictly for the past. For the future, we use 'will have' (Future Perfect).
Yes! This is used when the main verb is 'have'. Example: 'I would have had a better time if you were there.'
