意味
Stating the intention to pay with a credit or debit card.
文化的背景
Korea is one of the most card-friendly countries. Even for a 1,000 KRW (less than $1) purchase, cards are accepted. However, handing the card with two hands is a sign of respect. In business meetings, the person who invited the others usually pays. They will often sneak away to the counter to say '카드로 계산할게요' before the meal even ends to avoid a struggle over the bill. Older Koreans might still prefer cash in traditional markets, but younger Koreans (Gen Z/Millennials) often don't carry wallets at all, relying entirely on 'Samsung Pay' or 'Apple Pay'. There is NO tipping in Korea. When you say '카드로 계산할게요', the amount on the screen is exactly what you pay. Adding a tip to a card transaction is not a thing.
The Two-Hand Rule
Always hand your card over with two hands or with your right hand while touching your right elbow with your left hand. It shows great manners!
Installment Questions
If you spend over 50,000 KRW, the clerk will ask '할부해 드릴까요?' (Shall I do installments?). If you want to pay all at once, just say '일시불이요' (Ilsibbul-iyo).
