Forming the Subjunctive Stem
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
The subjunctive stem is formed by removing the '-نا' from the infinitive and adding specific endings to express possibility or desire.
- Remove '-نا' from the infinitive (e.g., 'کرنا' -> 'کر').
- Add the subjunctive endings: -وں (I), -و (you), -ے (he/she/it), -یں (we/they).
- Use this for wishes, polite requests, or hypothetical situations.
Meanings
The subjunctive mood in Urdu is used to express uncertainty, possibility, wishes, or polite requests rather than concrete facts.
Wishes and Desires
Expressing what one wants to happen.
“کاش میں وہاں جا سکوں۔”
“میں چاہتا ہوں کہ تم خوش رہو۔”
Polite Requests
Softening a command into a suggestion.
“کیا میں اندر آؤں؟”

Hypothetical/Future Possibility
Events that might occur.
“اگر وہ آئے تو ہم جائیں گے۔”
