In Bulgarian, modal verbs like 'moga' (can) or 'tryabva' (must) take a main verb in either perfective or imperfective aspect.
- Use imperfective for ongoing or repeated actions: 'Moga da cheta' (I can read/am able to read).
- Use perfective for single, completed actions: 'Moga da procheta' (I can finish reading).
- The modal verb itself does not change aspect; only the following verb changes.
Meanings
Bulgarian modal verbs are followed by the particle 'da' and a verb. The aspect of that second verb determines if the action is viewed as a continuous process or a completed event.
Process (Imperfective)
Focuses on the duration or repetition of the action.
“Moga da rabotya vseki den.”
“Tryabva da uchish po-chesto.”
Result (Perfective)
Focuses on the completion or the specific outcome of the action.
“Moga da svursha tazi rabota dnes.”
“Tryabva da kupish hlyab.”
