Writing is traditionally seen as a sacred act. Scribes (Debteras) would spend years mastering the art of writing on parchment (Branna) using ink made from plants. In cities like Addis Ababa, 'ጻፍ' is now used for digital communication. However, the older generation still values physical letters (Debdabe) for formal matters. Ethiopian schools emphasize rote learning and transcription. Teachers frequently use 'ጻፍ' to command students to copy notes from the board. In Ethiopia, a written signature or a thumbprint is often not enough; you are frequently asked to write your full name in front of an official to prove literacy and intent.
