Conditional Mood (-tu)
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
The conditional mood (-tu) expresses hypothetical actions or polite requests, functioning exactly like the English 'would'.
- Add -tu to the infinitive stem for most verbs: es darītu (I would do).
- Use it for polite requests: Vai jūs varētu palīdzēt? (Could you help?).
- It is used in hypothetical 'if' sentences: Ja man būtu laiks, es ietu (If I had time, I would go).
Meanings
The conditional mood is used to express actions that are dependent on a condition, or to soften requests and suggestions.
Hypothetical
Actions that would occur under specific circumstances.

Polite Request
Softening a command or request to sound more courteous.
