In traditional households, children are taught to speak softly as a sign of 'Adakkam' (humility). Asking an elder to 'Sathamaga pesu' (informally) is a major social taboo. In Tamil movies, 'Sathamaga pesu' is often used by heroes to show dominance or by villains to intimidate. Loudness is equated with power. In the noisy streets of Chennai, people naturally speak at a higher decibel. 'Sathama pesu' is a very common, non-offensive request among peers. The dialect might use 'Orava pesu' or 'Sathama katha' in certain regions, but 'Sathamaga pesu' remains universally understood.
