The 'Boiler' (бойлер) is a central part of Bulgarian life. Many people have to turn it on 30-60 minutes before they want to take a shower. In many Bulgarian bathrooms, there is no separate shower cabin; the whole room is the shower area with a drain in the floor. There is a common folk belief in the Balkans that taking a shower or washing your hair while you have a fever can make you sicker. During 'профилактика' (maintenance), entire neighborhoods lose hot water for weeks, leading to people heating water in pots to wash.
