Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Russian words are like Lego bricks: you add prefixes to change meaning and suffixes to change the part of speech.

  • Prefixes usually change the meaning of a verb (e.g., 'идти' to 'прийти').
  • Suffixes usually change the grammatical category, like turning a verb into a noun (e.g., 'читать' to 'читатель').
  • Roots remain the core meaning, while affixes act as the modifiers.

If you see a prefix on a basic verb, it's 90% likely to be Perfective. This is a huge help for choosing the right tense!

Watch out for 'fleeting vowels.' Words like рынок (market) lose the 'о' when you add endings: рынка. This happens a lot with -ок and -ек suffixes.
