In Kolkata, the 'Apni' register is strictly maintained in offices and with elders. Using 'Tumi' prematurely can be seen as a sign of poor upbringing. In Bangladesh, 'Apni' is also used for strangers, but there is a warm 'Tumi' culture that develops quickly. However, in formal interviews, 'Apni' remains the gold standard. In the UK or USA, younger generations sometimes struggle with the Apni/Tumi distinction, often defaulting to 'Tumi'. Using 'Apni' correctly is a sign of deep cultural connection. Students never use 'Tumi' with teachers. Asking for repetition is encouraged, but it must be done with the 'Apni' register to show respect for the 'Guru'.
