Reflexive and Reciprocal Pronouns: Myself, Each Other, One Another

Reflexive pronouns (myself, yourself, etc.) refer back to the subject. Reciprocal pronouns (each other, one another) show that two or more people do something to each other.

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use reflexive pronouns (myself, yourself) when the subject and object are the same, and reciprocal pronouns (each other) for mutual actions.

  • Reflexive: Subject acts on self. Example: 'I cut myself.'
  • Reciprocal: Two or more subjects act on each other. Example: 'They love each other.'
  • Emphasis: Use reflexive to add focus. Example: 'I did it myself!'
Subject + Verb + Reflexive Pronoun (e.g., I + love + myself)

نظرة عامة

## Reflexive Pronouns
| Subject | Reflexive |
|---|---|
| I | myself |
| you (singular) | yourself |
| he | himself |
| she | herself |
| it | itself |
| we | ourselves |
| you (plural) | yourselves |
| they | themselves |
### Use 1: Subject = Object
When the subject does something to themselves:
  • He cut himself while shaving.
  • She taught herself Spanish.
  • The cat licked itself clean.
### Use 2: Emphatic (for stress)
To emphasise that the subject did something personally:
  • I myself wrote every word. (no one else helped)
  • The manager himself answered the phone.
  • Did you do it yourself?
### By + Reflexive = Alone
  • She lives by herself. (= alone)
  • I cooked dinner by myself. (= without help)
## Reciprocal Pronouns
### Each Other / One Another
Used when two or more people perform the same action towards one another:
  • They love each other. (mutual — 2 people)
  • The students helped one another. (group — more formal)
Each other vs. one another: In modern English, these are largely interchangeable. *One another* is slightly more formal.
## Don't Overuse Reflexives
Some verbs do NOT take reflexive pronouns in English (unlike other languages):
  • I feel tired. ✅ (not: I feel myself tired)
  • She concentrated. ✅ (not: She concentrated herself)
  • We met at the station. ✅ (not: We met ourselves)
