tulla väsy

to get tired

المعنى

The feeling of exhaustion.

🌍

خلفية ثقافية

The concept of 'Saunaväsy' is a specific type of tiredness that is highly respected. It's the deep relaxation after a sauna. Finns are the world's top coffee drinkers, partly to fight the 'väsy' caused by the dark winters. In Finnish folklore, 'Väsy-Matti' is the one who brings tiredness to children, similar to the Sandman. Admitting you are tired is seen as honest and 'sisu'-compatible; you work hard, then you get tired.

🎯

Use with 'ihan'

Add 'ihan' (quite/totally) to sound more native: 'Tuli ihan väsy'.

⚠️

Avoid 'Minä olen väsy'

Even though you hear it occasionally in some dialects, it's safer for learners to use 'Minulla on väsy'.

Yes, it's a colloquial noun derived from 'väsymys'. It's widely accepted in spoken Finnish.

Only with close colleagues. In a formal meeting, say 'olen hieman väsynyt'.

'Väsy' is informal and cute; 'väsymys' is the standard, formal noun for tiredness.

Finnish uses the Allative case to show who the 'tiredness' is coming to. It's an impersonal construction.

Mostly, but it can also mean being mentally drained or 'done' with something.
