Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
In Armenian, prepositions usually attach to the relative pronoun or the noun it refers to within the clause.
- The preposition often precedes the relative pronoun: 'Այն տղան, որի հետ ես խոսում եմ' (The boy with whom I am speaking).
- If the preposition is a postposition, it follows the noun: 'Այն տունը, որի մեջ ես ապրում եմ' (The house in which I live).
- Ensure the case of the relative pronoun 'որի' matches the requirement of the preposition.

Meanings
This rule governs how we connect nouns to actions using prepositions within relative clauses.
Instrumental/Comitative
Expressing 'with' or 'by means of' someone or something.
“Այն ընկերը, որի հետ ես գնացի։”
“Այն գրիչը, որով ես գրում եմ։”
Locative/Spatial
Expressing location inside or at something.
“Այն քաղաքը, որի մեջ ես ծնվել եմ։”
“Այն սենյակը, որի մեջ նա նստած է։”
Referential
Expressing 'about' or 'concerning' someone or something.
“Այն ֆիլմը, որի մասին խոսում էինք։”

Learners often use 'որը' (nominative) when they should use 'որի' (genitive) for prepositional phrases.
Learners use 'որտեղ' (where) for everything, but 'որի մեջ' is more specific to 'in which'.
Both can mean 'with', but 'որով' is instrumental (by means of), while 'որի հետ' is comitative (in the company of).

Remember: 'Որի' is the hook, the preposition is the fish. You can't catch the fish without the hook!

For the noun you want to describe, use 'որի' and keep it inside.
