Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

In Kannada, you don't change the word order to ask a question; you simply add the particle 'ಅ' (a) to the end.

  • Keep the Subject-Object-Verb (SOV) order: 'ನೀವು ಕಾಫಿ ಕುಡಿಯುತ್ತೀರಾ?' (Do you drink coffee?)
  • Add the question particle 'ಅ' to the end of the sentence to turn a statement into a question.
  • For 'Wh-' questions, place the question word (who, what, where) in the position of the information requested.

The 'Answer' Trick

If you don't know where the question word goes, say the answer first. 'Coffee table mele ide' (Coffee is on the table). Replace 'table mele' with 'elli'. Result: 'Coffee elli ide?'

Avoid starting sentences with 'Elli' or 'Yenu'. It makes you sound like you're reading from a dictionary rather than talking to a human.

The Power of '-re'

When asking questions to elders or strangers, add '-re' to verbs or use 'Neevu' (you polite). 'Yaru?' sounds blunt; 'Avaru yaru?' is better.
