A2 Expression رسمي

기분이 나빠요.

gibuni nappayo.

I feel bad.

المعنى

To express a negative emotional state.

🌍

خلفية ثقافية

The concept of 'Kibun' is so central that it was once described by Westerners as the 'unwritten law' of Korean social life. To 'damage' someone's Kibun is a serious social faux pas. Spicy food (Maeun-eumsik) is the most common cultural 'remedy' for '기분이 나쁠 때' (when feeling bad). The endorphin rush from the heat is believed to 'reset' the Gi-bun. Nunchi (eye-measure) is the skill used to detect if someone's '기분' is '나쁘다' without them saying a word. High-Nunchi individuals are highly valued. In the era of K-Dramas, the phrase '기분 나빠' is often used by female leads to rebuff arrogant male leads, becoming a symbol of setting personal boundaries.

🎯

The 'Som' Softener

Add '좀' (jom - a bit) before '나빠요' to sound less aggressive. '기분이 좀 나빠요' sounds like 'I'm a bit upset' rather than 'I'm angry.'

⚠️

Don't use with '이다'

Never say '기분이 나쁜이에요.' Adjectives conjugate themselves. Just say '나빠요.'
