~고 말다
~고 말다 is a grammatical pattern used to express that an action ultimately happened, often despite efforts to prevent it, and frequently carries a sense of regret or an undesirable outcome.
You can attach it to the end of a verb stem. For example, if you wanted to say 'I ended up forgetting,' you would take the verb 잊다 (to forget) and attach ~고 말다, resulting in 잊고 말았다.
It's commonly used when reflecting on past actions that had unforeseen or unwanted consequences.
While it often implies regret, it can also simply indicate that an action inevitably occurred.
