Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Nepali distinguishes sounds by adding a puff of air; adding air changes the meaning of the word entirely.
- Unaspirated sounds (Alppran) are produced without extra breath: 'ka' (क).
- Aspirated sounds (Mahapran) require a strong puff of air: 'kha' (ख).
- Mixing them up changes the word: 'kalo' (black) vs 'khalo' (a pit).
