Sanskrit Chhanda relies on the weight of syllables (Laghu/Guru) to create rhythmic patterns in classical Nepali and Sanskrit literature.
- Short vowels (a, i, u, ṛ) are Laghu (1 unit). Example: 'न' (na).
- Long vowels (ā, ī, ū, e, ai, o, au) are Guru (2 units). Example: 'का' (kā).
- A short vowel followed by a conjunct consonant becomes Guru. Example: 'अन्त' (anta).
