المعنى

Ordering a coffee

🌍

خلفية ثقافية

When you order a coffee in a Slovak café, it is almost always served with a small glass of plain water. This is to cleanse the palate and stay hydrated. The city has a strong 'Kaviareň' culture. People spend hours sitting with one coffee, reading or talking. It is not considered rude to stay long. The 'Viedenská káva' (Viennese coffee) is popular in Slovakia. It is a long coffee topped with a tall head of whipped cream, served in a glass. In smaller towns, 'Turecká káva' (grounds in the cup) is still the default. If you want an espresso, you should specify 'presso'.

💡

The 'U' Rule

Most feminine things you order (káva, pizza, voda, zmrzlina) will end in -u.

💬

Water is free

Don't be surprised if you get water you didn't order. It's free and standard.
