Present Continuous: Verneinungen & Fragen (Arbeite ich?)
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
To ask questions, swap 'am/is/are' with the subject; for negatives, add 'not' after the 'be' verb.
- Questions: Move 'Am/Is/Are' to the front. Example: 'Are you working?'
- Negatives: Put 'not' after 'Am/Is/Are'. Example: 'I am not working.'
- Contractions: Use 'isn't' or 'aren't' for natural speech. Example: 'He isn't working.'
Overview
I am eating, bist du schon auf halbem Weg. Aber was, wenn das Essen schrecklich ist?I am not eating this!. Was, wenn du deinen Freund siehst, der etwas Komisches isst? Du musst fragen:
Are you eating a bug?.
Present Continuous ins Spiel. Es ist der Unterschied, ob man ein passiver Beobachter ist oder tatsächlich an einem WhatsApp-Gruppenchat teilnimmt.Present Continuous ist dein bester Freund für das Jetzt gleich. Es ist die Zeitform des TikTok-Scrollens, des Zoom-Meetings und der Bist du auf dem Weg?-SMS. Während die Grundform uns sagt, was passiert, machen dich die Verneinungs- und Frageformen zu einem funktionsfähigen Menschen auf Englisch.
Where are they going?oder zu sagen "I'm not liking this vibe". Es wäre ein Albtraum.
to be. Sobald du meisterst, wie am, is und are im Satz herumtanzen, wirst du die Lebensentscheidungen von jedem auf Englisch wie ein Profi hinterfragen. How This Grammar Works
Formation Pattern

You aren't oder You're not.
He isn't oder He's not.
She isn't oder She's not.
It isn't oder It's not.
We aren't oder We're not.
They aren't oder They're not.
aren't und isn't deine besten Freunde. Das volle is not zu benutzen klingt, als wärst du ein sehr wütender Elternteil oder ein viktorianischer Geist.

Common Mistakes
- The Missing
Be:You working?(Falsch!) ->Are you working?(Richtig!). Du kannst nicht einfach ein-ing-Wort auf jemanden werfen und auf das Beste hoffen. Es braucht seinenbe-Kumpel. - The Missing
-ing:Is she work?(Falsch!) ->Is she working?(Richtig!). Ohne das-ingist es wie ein Auto ohne Räder. Es fährt nirgendwo hin. - The
DoDisaster:Do you working?(NEIN!). Wir benutzendo/doesfür das Present Simple (Routine), nicht für Dinge, die jetzt passieren. Haltedoaus deinenPresent Continuous-Angelegenheiten raus. Es ist ein eifersüchtiges Verb und wird den Vibe ruinieren. - Double Negative:
I am not not working.(Technisch möglich, aber es bedeutet, dass du arbeitest, und du wirst deinen Chef nur verwirren.) - Forgeting the Question Flip:
You are coming?(In Ordnung für eine lässige SMS mit einem Fragezeichen, aber in einem formellen Test oder einem echten Vorstellungsgespräch brauchst duAre you coming?)

Can I use "amn't"?
Nein. Einfach... nein. Es ist kein Wort. Benutze I'm not. Wenn du "amn't" sagst, verliert irgendwo ein Linguist seine Flügel.
Is there a difference between "She's not and She isn't"?
Nicht wirklich. "She's not
ist im gesprochenen Englisch etwas gebräuchlicher, währendShe isn't" manchmal ein kleines bisschen nachdrücklicher klingen kann. Beide sind zu 100% in Ordnung für deinen Uber-Fahrer oder deinen Professor.
Do I use this for the future?

Why does English have so many -ing words?
Weil wir es lieben, Dinge so klingen zu lassen, als wären sie in Bewegung. Das hält das Leben spannend! Denk einfach dran: Kein be, kein -ing-Spaß.

Avoid contractions like 'isn't' and use 'is not' instead.
Drop the 'g' sound at the end of '-ing' and use 'n'.

Eselsbrücke
Remember 'B-S-I': Be verb, then Subject, then Ing-verb for questions.
Visuelle Assoziation

Rhyme

Story
Meet 'Not'. Not is a shy ghost who always hides right behind the 'Be' verb (am, is, are) but before the action (-ing). He only appears when things aren't happening.
Word Web
Herausforderung
Look around you. Find three things people are NOT doing right now and say them aloud (e.g., 'The cat is not barking').
Kulturelle Hinweise
British speakers often use 'aren't I' as a question tag or in first-person questions, which can be confusing for learners.
In very casual American speech, the 'g' in '-ing' is often dropped (e.g., 'Are you workin'?).
In international meetings, using the Present Continuous for questions is seen as more polite and less aggressive than the Present Simple.
The continuous aspect in English developed from an Old English construction involving a preposition 'on' and a verbal noun.

FAQ (8)
No, that is incorrect. You should say `Am I not?` (formal) or `Aren't I?` (informal).
It is a strange exception in English! `Aren't I` is the standard contraction for `Am I not` in questions.
In very casual speech, people sometimes drop the 'are', but for learners and in writing, it is better to say `Are you working?`.
`Isn't he` is more common and natural. `Is he not` is very formal or used for emphasis.
No, the main verb always stays in the `-ing` form. Only the verb `be` changes.
Yes! You can say `Are you coming tomorrow?` to ask about future plans.
Drop the 'e' before adding '-ing'. So, `Are you dancing?`.
No, `I aren't` is never correct. Always use `I'm not`.
