Presente Continuo: Negaciones y Preguntas (¿Estoy trabajando?)

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

To ask questions, swap 'am/is/are' with the subject; for negatives, add 'not' after the 'be' verb.

  • Questions: Move 'Am/Is/Are' to the front. Example: 'Are you working?'
  • Negatives: Put 'not' after 'Am/Is/Are'. Example: 'I am not working.'
  • Contractions: Use 'isn't' or 'aren't' for natural speech. Example: 'He isn't working.'
❓ [Am/Is/Are] + Subject + Verb-ing? | ❌ Subject + [Am/Is/Are] + not + Verb-ing

Overview

¡Necesitas decir
I am not eating this!
! ¿Qué pasa si ves a tu amigo comiendo algo raro? Tienes que preguntar:
Are you eating a bug?
.
Where are they going?
o decir "I'm not liking this vibe".

How This Grammar Works

2
For Negative Sentences:
3
Comienza con tu Subject (I, You, He, She, It, We, They).
4
Añade la forma correcta de be (am, is, are).
5
Añade la palabra not.
6
Termina con el verb + ing.
7
Ejemplo: She + is + not + working. -> She is not working.
8
For Question Sentences:
9
Comienza con la forma de be (Am, Is, Are).
10
Añade el Subject.
11
Añade el verb + ing.
12
Ejemplo: Are + you + coming? -> Are you coming?
14
I'm not (No existe el "amn't", ¡lo siento!)
15
You aren't o You're not.
16
He isn't o He's not.
17
She isn't o She's not.
18
It isn't o It's not.
19
We aren't o We're not.
20
They aren't o They're not.
21

When To Use It

    ¿Why are you wearing that?
    o
I am not feeling this new filter
    .
  • In the Kitchen: Cuando alguien te está ayudando a cocinar.
Are you adding salt to the cake? Please stop
    .
The plane is not taking off yet
    .
  • At Work/University: En una llamada de Zoom cuando el micrófono de alguien está fallando. "Are you talking? I can't hear you! o I am not sharing my screen right now".
  • Texting: El clásico
    Are you leaving yet?

No seas esa persona.
  • The Missing Be: You working? (¡Mal!) -> Are you working? (¡Bien!). Necesita a su compañero be.
  • The Missing -ing: Is she work? (¡Mal!) -> Is she working? (¡Bien!).
  • The Do Disaster: Do you working? (¡NO!).
  • Double Negative: I am not not working.
  • Forgeting the Question Flip: You are coming?

Contrast With Similar Patterns

Do you drink coffee? significa
    ¿Es un hábito general tuyo?
. I don't drink coffee significa Nunca lo hago.
Are you drinking coffee? significa
. I'm not drinking coffee significa
Do you smoke?
y te dice
I am not smoking

Quick FAQ

Q

¿Puedo usar "amn't"?

No. Simplemente... no. No es una palabra. Usa I'm not.

Q

¿Hay alguna diferencia entre "She's not y She isn't"?

En realidad, no. "She's not

Q

¿Uso esto para el futuro?

¡Sí! Puedes decir

Are you meeting us tonight?

¡Busca el verbo 'to be'!

Siempre fíjate en 'am', 'is' o 'are'. Para negar, 'not' va justo después. Para preguntar, 'am/is/are' salta al principio de la frase: Are you working?
⚠️

No lo mezcles con 'Do/Does'

¡Cuidado! 'Do' y 'does' son para preguntas y negativas en Present Simple. Con Present Continuous, 'am/is/are' lo maneja todo. ¡Nunca digas
Do you are working?
!
🎯

"I'm not" también es súper común.
🌍

Preguntas educadas

Cuando haces preguntas personales como Are you working? en un ambiente formal, añadir 'Excuse me,' o 'May I ask...' puede sonar más educado y menos directo. ¡El contexto importa!

Smart Tips

Stop! If you see '-ing', you must use 'Am/Is/Are'.

Do you working today? Are you working today?

Use the 'Be' verb from the question in your answer.

Are you coming? Yes, I come. Are you coming? Yes, I am.

Avoid contractions like 'isn't' and use 'is not' instead.

The system isn't working. The system is not working.

Drop the 'g' sound at the end of '-ing' and use 'n'.

What are you doing? What are you doin'?

Pronunciación

He ISN'T coming.

Contraction Stress

In negatives, the 'not' part (n't) is often stressed to emphasize the denial.

Rhyme

To ask a task that's in the flow, move the 'Be' and you will know!

Story

Meet 'Not'. Not is a shy ghost who always hides right behind the 'Be' verb (am, is, are) but before the action (-ing). He only appears when things aren't happening.

Word Web

AmIsAreNotIsn'tAren'tWorkingQuestion

Desafío

Look around you. Find three things people are NOT doing right now and say them aloud (e.g., 'The cat is not barking').

Notas culturales

British speakers often use 'aren't I' as a question tag or in first-person questions, which can be confusing for learners.

In very casual American speech, the 'g' in '-ing' is often dropped (e.g., 'Are you workin'?).

In international meetings, using the Present Continuous for questions is seen as more polite and less aggressive than the Present Simple.

The continuous aspect in English developed from an Old English construction involving a preposition 'on' and a verbal noun.

Preguntas frecuentes (8)

No, that is incorrect. You should say `Am I not?` (formal) or `Aren't I?` (informal).

It is a strange exception in English! `Aren't I` is the standard contraction for `Am I not` in questions.

In very casual speech, people sometimes drop the 'are', but for learners and in writing, it is better to say `Are you working?`.

`Isn't he` is more common and natural. `Is he not` is very formal or used for emphasis.

No, the main verb always stays in the `-ing` form. Only the verb `be` changes.

Yes! You can say `Are you coming tomorrow?` to ask about future plans.

Drop the 'e' before adding '-ing'. So, `Are you dancing?`.

No, `I aren't` is never correct. Always use `I'm not`.
