Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use the Present Continuous to describe actions happening exactly at this moment or temporary situations in your life.

  • Combine the verb 'to be' (am/is/are) with a verb ending in '-ing'. Example: 'I am eating.'
  • Add 'not' after 'to be' for negatives. Example: 'She is not (isn't) working.'
  • Move 'to be' to the front for questions. Example: 'Are you listening?'
👤 Subject + 🐝 (am/is/are) + 🏃‍♂️ Verb-ing

Overview

Probablemente estás leyendo esta oración justo ahora. No estás durmiendo.

How This Grammar Works

2
Comienza con tu Sujeto (I, You, He, She, It, We, They).
3
Agrega la forma correcta del verbo to be (am, are, is).
4
Agrega tu verbo principal.
5
7
Form | Example | Translation
8
--- | --- | ---
9
Positive | I am working | Estoy trabajando ahora mismo
10
Negative | You are not listening | No estás escuchando
11
Question | Is she calling? | ¿Ella está llamando?
12
Short Positive | We're eating | Estamos comiendo ahora mismo
13
Short Negative | They aren't going | Ellos no van
14

When To Use It

"I'm texting my mom" (Le estoy escribiendo a mi mamá).
"I'm staying in Paris for a week" (Me estoy quedando en París por una semana).
Tercero, para tendencias cambiantes.
The weather is getting warmer
(El clima se está poniendo más cálido). O,
Electric cars are becoming more popular
"I'm meeting Sarah at the café at 5 PM" (Me voy a ver con Sarah en el café a las 5 PM).
I work at Google
(mi trabajo) y "I'm working at Google today" (estoy físicamente ahí ahora mismo).

Common Mistakes

Muchas personas olvidan el am, is, o are. Dicen He working en lugar de
He is working
Describen sentimientos o estados, no acciones. No puedes decir "I'm liking this pizza". Aunque McDonald's diga "I'm lovin' it
, en la gramática estricta, decimos
I like this pizza
Tú no
be knowing" (estás sabiendo) algo; simplemente lo sabes (know).

Contrast With Similar Patterns

The sun rises in the east
(El sol sale por el este).
I drink tea every morning
  • I live in Madrid.
    (Este es mi hogar permanente).
  • I am living in Madrid.
  • He plays guitar. (Él tiene la habilidad; es un guitarrista).
  • He is playing guitar.
(¡Shhh!

"I'm flying to NYC tomorrow" (Vuelo a Nueva York mañana).

Q

Q

¿Por qué mi amigo británico dice "I'm having a bath

pero mi amigo estadounidense dice
I'm taking a bath"?

Q

¿Está bien decir "I'm loving this"?

En una conversación casual, ¡sí! El idioma siempre está evolucionando. Pero en un examen de inglés, apégate a I love this.

⚠️

Story

Imagine you are a reporter. You are standing in the middle of a busy street. You look around and say: 'The cars are moving, the people are walking, and I am talking to you!'

Word Web

Desafío

Look around the room right now. Say three things that are happening using 'is' or 'are'. (e.g., 'The clock is ticking.')

Notas culturales

Using the Present Continuous for future plans (e.g., 'I'm meeting him later') sounds more natural and certain than using 'will'.

In very casual speech, the 'g' in '-ing' is often dropped and replaced with an apostrophe (e.g., 'runnin', 'talkin').

Often used with 'just' to soften a request or explanation.

The 'be + -ing' construction developed in Middle English, likely evolving from an older construction 'be + on + verbal noun'.

Preguntas frecuentes (8)

Yes! You can use it for fixed plans, like `I'm meeting my friend at 5 PM.`

`Like` is a stative verb. These verbs describe feelings or states, not actions, so they usually stay in the Simple Present.

`I'm working` means right now. `I work` means it is your job or habit.

No, only for short verbs that end in one vowel and one consonant, like `run` -> `running` or `sit` -> `sitting`.

Technically no, but it's used in informal English and advertising (like McDonald's) to show strong, temporary emotion.

Put the 'be' verb first. Instead of `You are eating`, say `Are you eating?`.

Yes, but it usually means you are annoyed. `You are always losing your phone!`

Look for `now`, `at the moment`, `currently`, `today`, and `this week`.
