Presente Continuo: Acciones que suceden ahora
am/is/are y el verbo con -ing. ¡Es como tu cámara de acción!
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use the Present Continuous to describe actions happening exactly at this moment or temporary situations in your life.
- Combine the verb 'to be' (am/is/are) with a verb ending in '-ing'. Example: 'I am eating.'
- Add 'not' after 'to be' for negatives. Example: 'She is not (isn't) working.'
- Move 'to be' to the front for questions. Example: 'Are you listening?'
Overview
Present Continuous. Captura la vida en movimiento.Present Simple es como una foto estática de tus hábitos, el Present Continuous es el video en alta definición. Nos dice qué está pasando exactamente en este momento.ahora. Es el tiempo que usas cuando tu conductor de Uber está a cinco minutos. Es el tiempo para ese TikTok que estás grabando actualmente. How This Grammar Works
to be.-ing. No puedes tener uno sin el otro. Si solo dices I eating, suenas como un cavernícola hambriento.I am eat, suenas como un robot roto. Necesitas ambas piezas para que funcione. El verbo to be actúa como el motor.-ing es la carga. Se mantiene igual para todos.Formation Pattern
to be (am, are, is).
-ing al final del verbo.
ING como In Next Gear (En la siguiente marcha). Significa que la acción está avanzando.
When To Use It
The weather is getting warmer(El clima se está poniendo más cálido). O,
Electric cars are becoming more popular(Los autos eléctricos se están volviendo más populares).
Present Simple. Si está sucediendo en esta ventana específica de tiempo, usa el Present Continuous. Es la diferencia entre I work at Google(mi trabajo) y "I'm working at Google today" (estoy físicamente ahí ahora mismo).
Common Mistakes
Motor Perdido. Muchas personas olvidan el am, is, o are. Dicen He working en lugar de He is working. Es como tratar de conducir un auto sin motor. Otro grande es la
Trampa de los Verbos Estáticos. A algunos verbos no les gusta el
-ing. A estos los llamamos verbos estáticos. Describen sentimientos o estados, no acciones. No puedes decir "I'm liking this pizza". Aunque McDonald's diga "I'm lovin' it, en la gramática estricta, decimosI like this pizza
. Otros ejemplos sonbe knowing" (estás sabiendo) algo; simplemente lo sabes (want, know, needybelieve. Tú no
know). La ortografía también puede ser complicada. Si un verbo corto termina en consonante-vocal-consonante, duplicas la última letra. Run se convierte en running. Sit se convierte en sitting. Si termina en una e, ¡elimínala! Make se convierte en making. No dejes que las letras extra te confundan; solo intentan ser elegantes.Contrast With Similar Patterns
Present Continuous es el Present Simple. Piensa en el Present Simple como el tiempo verbal de Siempre/Usualmente. Es para hechos, hábitos y cosas que son generalmente ciertas. The sun rises in the east(El sol sale por el este).
I drink tea every morning(Bebo té todas las mañanas). El
Present Continuous es el tiempo verbal de Justo Ahora/Temporal.I live in Madrid.
(Este es mi hogar permanente).I am living in Madrid.
(Esto se siente temporal, tal vez solo por un semestre).
He plays guitar.(Él tiene la habilidad; es un guitarrista). He is playing guitar.
(¡Shhh! ¡Lo está haciendo justo ahora en la habitación de al lado!)
, podrían buscar un incendio. Si dicesI smoke", solo pensarán que tienes un mal hábito.
Quick FAQ
¿Puedo usar el Present Continuous para el futuro?
¡Sí! Si es un plan fijo. "I'm flying to NYC tomorrow" (Vuelo a Nueva York mañana).
¿Qué pasa si no lo estoy haciendo *exactamente* en este segundo?
Aún cuenta si es un proyecto en tu vida. "I'm reading a great book" (Estoy leyendo un gran libro) cuenta incluso si el libro está en tu mesa de noche ahora mismo.
¿Por qué mi amigo británico dice "I'm having a bath
pero mi amigo estadounidense diceI'm taking a bath"?
¡Ambos son correctos! Los dos usan el Present Continuous para describir la acción en progreso.
¿Está bien decir "I'm loving this"?
En una conversación casual, ¡sí! El idioma siempre está evolucionando. Pero en un examen de inglés, apégate a I love this.

Mnemotecnia
Remember 'BE + ING = HAPPENING'. You need both parts to make the action move!
Asociación visual
Imagine a video camera recording a scene. The red 'REC' light is blinking—that's the '-ing' part. The camera itself is the 'be' verb holding everything together.
Rhyme

Story
Imagine you are a reporter. You are standing in the middle of a busy street. You look around and say: 'The cars are moving, the people are walking, and I am talking to you!'
Word Web
Desafío
Look around the room right now. Say three things that are happening using 'is' or 'are'. (e.g., 'The clock is ticking.')
Notas culturales
Using the Present Continuous for future plans (e.g., 'I'm meeting him later') sounds more natural and certain than using 'will'.
In very casual speech, the 'g' in '-ing' is often dropped and replaced with an apostrophe (e.g., 'runnin', 'talkin').
Often used with 'just' to soften a request or explanation.
The 'be + -ing' construction developed in Middle English, likely evolving from an older construction 'be + on + verbal noun'.

Preguntas frecuentes (8)
Yes! You can use it for fixed plans, like `I'm meeting my friend at 5 PM.`
`Like` is a stative verb. These verbs describe feelings or states, not actions, so they usually stay in the Simple Present.
`I'm working` means right now. `I work` means it is your job or habit.
No, only for short verbs that end in one vowel and one consonant, like `run` -> `running` or `sit` -> `sitting`.
Technically no, but it's used in informal English and advertising (like McDonald's) to show strong, temporary emotion.
Put the 'be' verb first. Instead of `You are eating`, say `Are you eating?`.
Yes, but it usually means you are annoyed. `You are always losing your phone!`
Look for `now`, `at the moment`, `currently`, `today`, and `this week`.
