現在進行形:今起こっている行動

「今まさにしていること」や「最近の活動」を伝える時は、am/is/areverb-ing をセットで使いましょう。

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use the Present Continuous to describe actions happening exactly at this moment or temporary situations in your life.

  • Combine the verb 'to be' (am/is/are) with a verb ending in '-ing'. Example: 'I am eating.'
  • Add 'not' after 'to be' for negatives. Example: 'She is not (isn't) working.'
  • Move 'to be' to the front for questions. Example: 'Are you listening?'
👤 Subject + 🐝 (am/is/are) + 🏃‍♂️ Verb-ing

Overview

How This Grammar Works

この文法は、2人1組のチームのように機能するんだ。ピーナッツバターとジェリーのサンドイッチを想像してみて。片方は動詞の to be。

Formation Pattern

1
この時制を作るのは、簡単なレシピに従うようなものだよ。
2
まずは主語(I, You, He, She, It, We, They)から始めよう。
3
次に、to be 動詞の正しい形(am, are, is)を足す。
4
メインの動詞を足す。
5
動詞の最後に接尾辞の -ing をくっつける。
6
活用表はこんな感じ:
7
Form | Example | Translation
8
--- | --- | ---
9
Positive | I am working | Ich arbeite gerade
10
Negative | You are not listening | Du hörst nicht zu
11
Question | Is she calling? | Ruft sie an?
12
Short Positive | We're eating | Wir essen gerade
13
Short Negative | They aren't going | Sie gehen nicht
14
暗記のコツ:「ING」を「In Next Gear(次のギアに入っている)」と考えてみて。動作が前に進んでいるって意味だよ。

When To Use It

この時制を使う場面は、主に4つあるよ。
1つ目は、一番分かりやすい「今まさに」起きていること。「お母さんにメールしてるところなんだ(I'm texting my mom.)」。
2つ目は、「一時的な状況」について。例えば普段はロンドンに住んでいるけど、今週だけパリに滞在(たいざい)している、なんて時だね。「1週間パリに滞在(たいざい)してるんだ(I'm staying in Paris for a week.)」。
3つ目は、「変化しているトレンド」について。「暖かくなってきている(The weather is getting warmer.)」とか、「電気自動車が普及(ふきゅう)してきている(Electric cars are becoming more popular.)」とか。
最後は、100%決まっている「未来の予定」。「5時にカフェでサラと会うことになってるんだ(I'm meeting Sarah at the café at 5 PM.)」。動詞の形をしたデジタルカレンダーみたいなものだね。
ただ、1つ覚えておいて。毎日やっている「習慣」なら、Present Simple現在形(げんざいけい))を使おう。この特定の期間だけに起きていることなら、Present Continuous を使うんだ。「Googleで働いています(I work at Google)」(自分の仕事)と、「今日はGoogleで仕事をしてるんだ(I'm working at Google today)」(今物理的にそこにいる)の違いだね。

Common Mistakes

一番多い間違いは「エンジンの欠如(けつじょ)」だね。多くの人が amisare を忘れちゃうんだ。「He is working」と言うべきところを「He working」って言っちゃう。
何かを「be knowing(知っている最中)」とは言わず、単に know(知っている)と言うんだ。
スペルも少しトリッキーかもしれない。短い動詞が「子音・母音・子音」で終わる場合は、最後の文字を重ねるんだ。Runrunning に、Sitsitting になる。もし語尾が e で終わるなら、それを取っちゃおう! Makemaking になる。余計な文字に惑わされないでね。ちょっとオシャレしてるだけだからさ。

Contrast With Similar Patterns

Present Continuous の最大のライバルは Present Simple だ。Present Simple は「いつも・大抵」の時制だと考えて。事実や習慣、一般的に正しいことについて使うんだ。「太陽は東から(のぼ)る(The sun rises in the east.)」とか、「毎朝お茶を飲む(I drink tea every morning.)」とかね。一方で Present Continuous は「今まさに・一時的」な時制なんだ。
この2つを比べてみて:
  • I live in Madrid.
    (ここは僕の永住(えいじゅう)の地だ。)
  • I am living in Madrid.
    (一時的に住んでいる感じ。今学期だけ、とかね。)
  • He plays guitar. (彼はギターが弾ける。ギタリストなんだ。)
  • He is playing guitar.
    (シーッ!今隣の部屋で弾いてるんだよ!)
一方は「ライフスタイル」で、もう一方は「瞬間」。使い分けないと、相手が混乱しちゃうかも。「I'm smoking(今吸ってる)」って言うと、周りの人は火事かと思って火を探すかもしれないけど、「I smoke(タバコを吸う)」って言えば、単に喫煙の習慣があるんだなと思われるだけだよ。

Quick FAQ

Q

未来のことに Present Continuous を使ってもいいの?

もちろん!予定がしっかり決まっているならね。「明日ニューヨークに飛ぶんだ(I'm flying to NYC tomorrow.)」みたいにね。

Q

「今この瞬間」やっていないことでもいいの?

人生における「プロジェクト」ならOKだよ。今まさに本が枕元に置いてあるだけだとしても、「すごい本を読んでいるんだ(I'm reading a great book)」って言えるんだ。

Q

イギリスの友達は "I'm having a bath« って言うのに、アメリカの友達は »I'm taking a bath" って言うのはなぜ?

どっちも正解!どちらも進行中の動作を説明するために Present Continuous を使っているよ。

Q

"I'm loving this"(これめっちゃ気に入ってる)って言っても大丈夫?

カジュアルな会話ならOK!言葉は常に進化しているからね。でも、英語の試験では I love this にしておいたほうが無難かな。

Using the Present Continuous for future plans (e.g., 'I'm meeting him later') sounds more natural and certain than using 'will'.

In very casual speech, the 'g' in '-ing' is often dropped and replaced with an apostrophe (e.g., 'runnin', 'talkin').

Often used with 'just' to soften a request or explanation.

The 'be + -ing' construction developed in Middle English, likely evolving from an older construction 'be + on + verbal noun'.

よくある質問 (8)

Yes! You can use it for fixed plans, like `I'm meeting my friend at 5 PM.`

`Like` is a stative verb. These verbs describe feelings or states, not actions, so they usually stay in the Simple Present.

`I'm working` means right now. `I work` means it is your job or habit.

No, only for short verbs that end in one vowel and one consonant, like `run` -> `running` or `sit` -> `sitting`.

Technically no, but it's used in informal English and advertising (like McDonald's) to show strong, temporary emotion.

Put the 'be' verb first. Instead of `You are eating`, say `Are you eating?`.

Yes, but it usually means you are annoyed. `You are always losing your phone!`

Look for `now`, `at the moment`, `currently`, `today`, and `this week`.
