현재진행형: 부정문 및 의문문 (제가 일하고 있나요?)

현재진행형의 부정문과 의문문만 알면 지금 일어나는 일을 완벽하게 말할 수 있어요! not과 «be동사» 위치만 기억하면 끝이에요.

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

To ask questions, swap 'am/is/are' with the subject; for negatives, add 'not' after the 'be' verb.

  • Questions: Move 'Am/Is/Are' to the front. Example: 'Are you working?'
  • Negatives: Put 'not' after 'Am/Is/Are'. Example: 'I am not working.'
  • Contractions: Use 'isn't' or 'aren't' for natural speech. Example: 'He isn't working.'
❓ [Am/Is/Are] + Subject + Verb-ing? | ❌ Subject + [Am/Is/Are] + not + Verb-ing

Overview

Are you reading this right now while you're supposed to be studying? 지금 공부해야 하는데 이 글을 읽고 있나요? Or maybe you're not paying attention because you're waiting for a pizza delivery?
아니면 피자 배달을 기다리느라 집중이 안 되나요? Either way, you've just used the grammar we're talking about today. 어느 쪽이든, 여러분은 방금 우리가 오늘 이야기할 문법을 사용한 거예요.
In English, we don't just say what's happening; we also need to ask questions and say what *isn't* happening. 영어에서는 단순히 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지 말하는 것뿐만 아니라, 질문을 하거나 무슨 일이 일어나지 *않고 있는지*도 말해야 해요. If you can say I am eating, you're halfway there.
I am eating이라고 말할 수 있다면 이미 절반은 온 거예요. But what if the food is terrible? You need to say
I am not eating this!
하지만 음식이 끔찍하다면요?
I am not eating this!
라고 말해야겠죠. What if you see your friend eating something weird? You've got to ask,
Are you eating a bug?
친구가 이상한 걸 먹고 있는 걸 봤다면요?
Are you eating a bug?
라고 물어봐야 해요. That's where the negative and question forms of the Present Continuous come in. 바로 여기서 Present Continuous의 부정문과 의문문 형태가 등장해요.
It’s the difference between being a passive observer and actually participating in a WhatsApp group chat. 이건 수동적인 관찰자로 남느냐, 아니면 왓츠앱 단톡방에 실제로 참여하느냐의 차이와 같아요.
The Present Continuous is your right now best friend. Present Continuous는 여러분의 «지금 당장» 베프예요. It’s the tense of the TikTok scroll, the Zoom meeting, and the
are you on your way?
text message.
틱톡 스크롤, 줌(Zoom) 회의, 그리고 «지금 오고 있어?»라는 문자 메시지의 시제죠. While the basic form tells us what’s happening, the negative and question forms are what make you a functional human in English. 기본 형태가 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지 알려준다면, 부정문과 의문문 형태는 여러분을 영어로 기능하는 인간으로 만들어 줘요.
Without them, you can't disagree, you can't investigate, and you definitely can't gossip. 이게 없으면 반대할 수도 없고, 따져 물을 수도 없고, 무엇보다 잡담을 떨 수가 없거든요. Imagine trying to use Instagram without being able to ask
Where are they going?
or say "I'm not liking this vibe.« »Where are they going?«이라고 물어보거나 »I'm not liking this vibe"라고 말하지 못하는 상태로 인스타그램을 한다고 상상해 보세요.
It would be a nightmare. 정말 악몽일 거예요. These forms allow you to clarify facts and express boundaries in real-time.
이 형태들은 실시간으로 사실을 확인하고 경계를 표현할 수 있게 해줘요. It’s all about the movement of the verb to be. 핵심은 to be 동사의 움직임이에요.
Once you master how am, is, and are dance around the sentence, you’ll be questioning everyone's life choices in English like a pro. am, is, are가 문장 안에서 어떻게 춤추듯 움직이는지 마스터하면, 프로처럼 영어로 다른 사람들의 인생 선택에 의문을 제기할 수 있게 될 거예요. Just don't blame me if you start asking too many questions at the dinner table.
저녁 식사 자리에서 너무 많은 질문을 하기 시작했다고 해서 제 탓을 하진 마세요.

How This Grammar Works

Think of the Present Continuous as a three-part machine: the Subject, the Auxiliary Verb (am/is/are), and the Main Verb (the one with -ing). Present ContinuousSubject, Auxiliary Verb (am/is/are), 그리고 Main Verb (-ing가 붙은 것)의 세 부분으로 구성된 기계라고 생각하세요. To make it negative or turn it into a question, we don't add new fancy words like do or does. 부정문으로 만들거나 질문으로 바꿀 때, dodoes 같은 새로운 단어를 추가하지 않아요.
We just play with the parts we already have. 그냥 이미 가지고 있는 부품들을 가지고 노는 거예요. In the negative, we just drop a not right after the be verb.
부정문에서는 be 동사 바로 뒤에 not을 툭 떨어뜨려 놓으면 돼요. It’s like putting a No Entry sign in the middle of your sentence. 문장 중간에 «진입 금지» 표지판을 세우는 것과 같죠.
For questions, we do a little flip-flop. 의문문에서는 위치를 살짝 바꿔요. The be verb jumps to the front of the line, leaving the Subject behind.
be 동사가 줄 맨 앞으로 점프해서 Subject를 뒤에 남겨두는 거죠. It’s a very simple move, but it completely changes the energy of the sentence from "I'm telling you to I'm asking you.« 아주 간단한 이동이지만, 문장의 에너지를 »말해주는 것«에서 »물어보는 것"으로 완전히 바꿔버려요. If you've ever played a video game where you have to swap characters, this is exactly that.
캐릭터를 교체해야 하는 비디오 게임을 해본 적이 있다면, 이게 딱 그거예요. Am/Is/Are is your main player here, and it does all the heavy lifting while the -ing verb just hangs out at the end, minding its own business. 여기서 Am/Is/Are가 메인 플레이어라서 힘든 일은 다 하고, -ing 동사는 그냥 끝에 매달려 자기 할 일 하면서 노는 거죠.

Formation Pattern

1
Let's break the construction down into easy steps so you don't end up sounding like a broken robot. 고장 난 로봇처럼 들리지 않도록 구조를 쉬운 단계로 쪼개 볼게요.
2
For Negative Sentences:
3
Start with your Subject (I, You, He, She, It, We, They). Subject로 시작하세요 (I, You, He, She, It, We, They).
4
Add the correct form of be (am, is, are). 알맞은 형태의 be를 추가하세요 (am, is, are).
5
Add the word not. not이라는 단어를 추가하세요.
6
Finish with the verb + ing. verb + ing로 마무리하세요.
7
Example: She + is + not + working. -> She is not working. (Or the cooler version: She isn't working.) 예시: She + is + not + working. -> She is not working. (아니면 더 쿨한 버전: She isn't working.)
8
For Question Sentences:
9
Start with the form of be (Am, Is, Are). be 형태 (Am, Is, Are)로 시작하세요.
10
Add the Subject. Subject를 추가하세요.
11
Add the verb + ing. verb + ing를 추가하세요.
12
Example: Are + you + coming? -> Are you coming? (Don't forget the question mark, or people will think you're just making a very weird statement.) 예시: Are + you + coming? -> Are you coming? (물음표를 잊지 마세요. 안 그러면 사람들이 아주 이상한 평서문을 말한다고 생각할 거예요.)
13
Contractions (The way real people talk): 3. 축약형 (진짜 사람들이 말하는 방식):
14
I'm not (There is no "amn't," sorry!) I'm not ("amn't"는 없어요, 미안해요!)
15
You aren't or You're not.
16
He isn't or He's not.
17
She isn't or She's not.
18
It isn't or It's not.
19
We aren't or We're not.
20
They aren't or They're not.
21
Pro-tip: If you're texting, aren't and isn't are your best friends. Using the full is not sounds like you're a very angry parent or a Victorian ghost. 꿀팁: 문자를 보낼 때는 aren'tisn't가 최고의 친구예요. is not을 풀어서 쓰면 엄청 화난 부모님이나 빅토리아 시대 유령처럼 들리거든요.

When To Use It

You'll use these forms constantly in your digital and physical life. 디지털 세상과 현실 생활에서 이 형태들을 끊임없이 쓰게 될 거예요.
  • On Social Media: When you see a friend's post and you're confused.
    Why are you wearing that?
    or
I am not feeling this new filter.
소셜 미디어에서: 친구의 게시물을 보고 헷갈릴 때.
    Why are you wearing that?
    또는
I am not feeling this new filter.
  • In the Kitchen: When someone is helping you cook.
Are you adding salt to the cake? Please stop.
부엌에서: 누군가 요리를 «도와주고» 있을 때.
Are you adding salt to the cake? 제발 멈춰.
  • During Travel: Checking your flight status on an app.
The plane is not taking off yet.
여행 중에: 앱으로 비행기 상태를 확인할 때.
The plane is not taking off yet.
  • At Work/University: On a Zoom call when someone's microphone is acting up. "Are you talking? I can't hear you! or I am not sharing my screen right now.« 직장/대학에서: 줌 통화 중 누군가의 마이크가 이상할 때. »Are you talking? 안 들려요!« 또는 »I am not sharing my screen right now."
  • Texting: The classic
    Are you leaving yet?
when your friend is inevitably 20 minutes late. 문자할 때: 친구가 20분 늦는 게 뻔할 때 날리는 고전 멘트
    Are you leaving yet?
    .
Basically, if it’s happening (or not happening) right this second, and you want to be a bit more interactive than a potato, this is the grammar you need. 기본적으로, 지금 당장 일어나고 있는 일(혹은 안 일어나고 있는 일)이고, 감자보다는 좀 더 반응을 잘하고 싶다면, 이게 바로 여러분에게 필요한 문법이에요. It’s the language of the present moment. 현재 순간을 위한 언어죠.

Common Mistakes

Even though this is A1 level, people mess this up all the time. Don't be that person. 이게 A1 레벨이라도, 사람들은 항상 실수를 해요. 그런 사람이 되지 마세요.
  • The Missing Be: You working? (Wrong!) -> Are you working? (Right!). You can't just throw an -ing word at someone and hope for the best. It needs its be buddy. Be 빼먹기: You working? (땡!) -> Are you working? (딩동댕!). 그냥 -ing 단어만 툭 던져놓고 잘 되길 바랄 순 없어요. be 단짝이 필요하다고요.
  • The Missing -ing: Is she work? (Wrong!) -> Is she working? (Right!). Without the -ing, it’s like a car without wheels. It’s not going anywhere. -ing 빼먹기: Is she work? (땡!) -> Is she working? (딩동댕!). -ing가 없으면 바퀴 없는 자동차와 같아요. 아무 데도 못 가요.
  • The Do Disaster: Do you working? (NO!). We use do/does for the Present Simple (routine), not for things happening now. Keep do out of your Present Continuous business. It’s a jealous verb and it will ruin the vibe. Do 재앙: Do you working? (안돼요!). do/does는 지금 일어나는 일이 아니라 Present Simple (일상적인 일)에 써요. Present Continuous 일에 do를 끼워 넣지 마세요. 질투가 심한 동사라 분위기를 망칠 거예요.
  • Double Negative: I am not not working. (Technically a thing, but it means you ARE working, and you’ll just confuse your boss.) 이중 부정: I am not not working. (기술적으로는 말이 되지만, 일하고 있다는 뜻이 돼서 상사만 헷갈리게 할 거예요.)
  • Forgeting the Question Flip: You are coming? (Fine for a casual text with a question mark, but in a formal test or a real interview, you need Are you coming?) 질문 순서 뒤집기 까먹음: You are coming? (물음표 붙인 가벼운 문자로는 괜찮지만, 정식 시험이나 진짜 면접에서는 Are you coming?이라고 해야 해요.)

Contrast With Similar Patterns

The biggest rival to the Present Continuous is the Present Simple. Present Continuous의 최대 라이벌은 Present Simple이에요.
  • Present Simple (Negative/Question): Used for habits and facts. Do you drink coffee? means
Is it a general habit of yours?
    I don't drink coffee means
    I never do it.
Present Simple (부정/의문): 습관이나 사실에 사용해요. Do you drink coffee?는 «평소에 커피 마시는 습관이 있나요?»라는 뜻이에요. I don't drink coffee는 «전 절대 안 마셔요»라는 뜻이죠.
  • Present Continuous (Negative/Question): Used for right now. Are you drinking coffee? means
Is there a cup in your hand at this exact moment?
    I'm not drinking coffee means
My hands are currently empty (even if I usually love lattes).
Present Continuous (부정/의문): 지금 당장에 사용해요. Are you drinking coffee?는 «정확히 지금 이 순간 손에 컵을 들고 있나요?»라는 뜻이에요. I'm not drinking coffee는 «지금 제 손은 비어 있어요 (평소에 라떼를 엄청 좋아하더라도 말이죠)»라는 뜻이고요.
Think of the Present Simple as your life's Wikipedia page (static facts) and the Present Continuous as your Instagram Story (what's happening for 24 hours). Present Simple은 내 인생의 위키백과 페이지(변하지 않는 사실)라고 생각하고, Present Continuous는 인스타그램 스토리(24시간 동안 일어나는 일)라고 생각하세요. If you ask someone
Do you smoke?
and they say
I am not smoking,
they are probably holding a cigarette behind their back and being very literal.
One is about your identity; the other is about your current actions. 누군가에게
Do you smoke?
라고 물었는데
I am not smoking
이라고 대답한다면, 아마 등 뒤에 담배를 숨기고 아주 문자 그대로 대답하는 걸 거예요. 하나는 정체성에 관한 것이고, 다른 하나는 현재 행동에 관한 것이거든요.

Quick FAQ

Q

Can I use "amn't«? Q: »amn't"를 써도 되나요?

No. Just... no. It’s not a word. Use I'm not. If you say "amn't," a linguist somewhere loses their wings. A: 아니요. 그냥... 안 돼요. 그런 단어는 없어요. I'm not을 쓰세요. 여러분이 "amn't"라고 말하면 어딘가에서 언어학자가 날개를 잃을지도 몰라요.

Q

Is there a difference between "She's not and She isn't«? Q: »She's not«과 »She isn't"에 차이가 있나요?

Not really. "She's not

is slightly more common in spoken English, while
She isn't
can sometimes sound a tiny bit more emphatic. Both are 100% fine for your Uber driver or your professor. A: 딱히 없어요. 구어체 영어에서는
She's not«이 조금 더 흔하고, »She isn't"는 아주 조금 더 강조하는 느낌이 들 수 있어요. 우버 기사님이나 교수님한테나 둘 다 100% 괜찮아요.

Q

Do I use this for the future? Q: 이걸 미래에도 쓰나요?

Yes! You can say

Are you meeting us tonight?
We use it for fixed plans. But for now, focus on the right now part so you don't get a headache. A: 네!
Are you meeting us tonight?
이라고 말할 수 있어요. 정해진 계획에 대해 말할 때 쓰죠. 하지만 지금은 머리 아프지 않게 «지금 당장» 부분에만 집중하세요.

Q

Why does English have so many -ing words? Q: 영어에는 왜 그렇게 -ing 단어가 많나요?

Because we love making things sound like they are in motion. It keeps life exciting! Just remember: No be, no -ing fun. A: 왜냐하면 우리는 사물이 움직이고 있는 것처럼 말하는 걸 좋아하거든요. 삶을 흥미진진하게 만들잖아요! 그냥 기억하세요: be가 없으면 -ing의 재미도 없어요.

챌린지

Look around you. Find three things people are NOT doing right now and say them aloud (e.g., 'The cat is not barking').

문화 노트

British speakers often use 'aren't I' as a question tag or in first-person questions, which can be confusing for learners.

In very casual American speech, the 'g' in '-ing' is often dropped (e.g., 'Are you workin'?).

In international meetings, using the Present Continuous for questions is seen as more polite and less aggressive than the Present Simple.

The continuous aspect in English developed from an Old English construction involving a preposition 'on' and a verbal noun.

자주 묻는 질문 (8)

No, that is incorrect. You should say `Am I not?` (formal) or `Aren't I?` (informal).

It is a strange exception in English! `Aren't I` is the standard contraction for `Am I not` in questions.

In very casual speech, people sometimes drop the 'are', but for learners and in writing, it is better to say `Are you working?`.

`Isn't he` is more common and natural. `Is he not` is very formal or used for emphasis.

No, the main verb always stays in the `-ing` form. Only the verb `be` changes.

Yes! You can say `Are you coming tomorrow?` to ask about future plans.

Drop the 'e' before adding '-ing'. So, `Are you dancing?`.

No, `I aren't` is never correct. Always use `I'm not`.
