Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Turn actions into adjectives by adding '-щ' to the present stem to describe someone currently doing something.

  • Take the 1st person singular present form and replace the ending with -ещ or -ящ (e.g., чета -> четящ).
  • It must agree in gender, number, and definiteness with the noun it describes (e.g., четяща жена).
  • Used primarily in formal writing and literature to replace 'който' (who/which) clauses.
Verb Stem + Suffix (-ещ/-ящ) + Adjective Ending = Active Description 🏃‍♂️✨

A verbal adjective that describes a person or object performing an action simultaneously with the main verb of the sentence.

The participle functions as a noun (the person who does the action).

The 'Who' Test

If you can replace the word with 'който + verb', you should probably use a participle to sound more professional in writing.
⚠️

No 'To Be'

Never use 'съм' (to be) with a present active participle. 'Аз съм четящ' is a classic 'foreigner' mistake.
💡

The Yat Rule

If the plural ends in -ещи, the masculine singular will likely have -ящ (e.g., четящ -> четещи). This is the 'Yat' alternation.
💬

Keep it for Writing

In a cafe, say 'човекът, който пуши'. In a newspaper, write 'пушещият човек'. Using it in speech can sound a bit 'robotic'.

Smart Tips

Use participles like 'владеещ' or 'търсещ' to sound more professional and concise.

Аз съм човек, който търси работа. Специалист, търсещ нови възможности.

Check if it's describing a noun. If it is, it's an active participle. If it's at the end of a sentence describing an action, it might be something else.

Той е пеещ. Той е пеещият човек.

Always switch 'я' to 'е' if you see an 'и' coming up. It's the golden rule of Bulgarian phonology.

четящи четещи

Swap one of the 'който' clauses for a participle to improve the flow of your writing.

Човекът, който стои там и който носи шапка... Стоящият там човек, който носи шапка...

تلفظ

четЯщ, говорЕщ

Stress on Suffix

Bulgarian literature from the 19th and 20th centuries uses these participles extensively to create a 'high' poetic tone.

Official Bulgarian documents (legal, medical) prefer participles to keep sentences 'objective' and concise.

On apps like LinkedIn, participles are common in headlines (e.g., 'Търсещ нови предизвикателства'), but on Facebook, they are almost never used in comments.

No. In Bulgarian, you just use the present tense (`Аз чета`). Using `Аз съм четящ` is grammatically incorrect and sounds like a literal translation from English.

It's mostly about conjugation. 1st and 2nd conjugation verbs use `-ещ` (which becomes `-ящ` in masculine singular due to stress). 3rd conjugation verbs use `-щ` after the stem vowel `-а` or `-я`.

Rarely. In daily life, people prefer using `който` (who/which). You will mostly see participles in books, news, and formal documents.

Just add `не` before the participle, usually as one word: `непушещ` (non-smoking), `незнаещ` (not knowing).

This is the 'Yat' vowel rule. The 'я' changes to 'е' when the following syllable contains a front vowel like 'и'.

Only imperfective verbs can form a present active participle. Perfective verbs (which describe completed actions) do not have this form.

It's both! It is a participle that has become a noun, meaning 'a student' or 'a learner'. This is called substantivization.

Yes, they are cognates and function almost identically. If you know Russian, this will be very easy for you.
