Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Passive participles describe an action done to someone or something, functioning like adjectives that must agree in gender and number.

  • Add -н or -т to the past aorist stem: 'каза' becomes 'казан' (said).
  • They must agree with the noun: 'счупен' (m), 'счупена' (f), 'счупено' (n), 'счупени' (pl).
  • Used with 'съм' (to be) to form the passive voice: 'Книгата е прочетена' (The book is read).
Verb Stem + (-н/-т) + Gender Ending (∅/а/о/и) = 📦 Done State

💡

The -т Rule

If a verb is very short (one syllable in the stem like 'пи', 'би', 'взе'), it almost always takes the -т ending.
⚠️

Agreement is Key

Always look at the noun first. If it's plural, the participle MUST end in -и, no matter the gender.
🎯

Perfective vs Imperfective

Most passive participles are formed from perfective verbs because they describe a completed result.

No, only with transitive verbs (verbs that can have a direct object). You can't have a 'slept bed' in the same way in Bulgarian.

It depends on the verb stem. Most verbs use `-н` or `-ен`. Verbs with stems ending in `-и`, `-е`, or `-у` often use `-т` (e.g., `бит`, `чут`).

Yes, we use the preposition `от`. For example: `Книгата е написана от Иван`.

This follows the verb group. Group 1 (-а/-я) usually results in `-ан`, while Group 2 and 3 result in `-ен`.

Yes, some have become nouns, like `учен` (learned person/scientist).

Only if you are forming a sentence. If you are using it as an adjective before a noun (e.g., `счупената ваза`), you don't need `съм`.
