Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
In Bulgarian negation, use Imperfective for general 'no' and Perfective for 'failed to achieve a specific result'.
- Use Imperfective for habits: 'Не пуша' (I don't smoke).

Meanings
The choice between Imperfective (несвършен) and Perfective (свършен) aspect in negative sentences determines whether you are denying an action entirely or just its completion.
General Denial of Action
Using the Imperfective aspect to state that an action simply does not happen, never happens, or is not in progress.
“Той не пие кафе. (He doesn't drink coffee.)”
“Ние не пътуваме често. (We don't travel often.)”
Specific Result Failure
Using the Perfective aspect to indicate that a specific, intended action was not completed or achieved at a particular moment.
“Не намерих ключовете си. (I didn't find my keys.)”
“Той не си купи кола. (He didn't buy a car - specifically the one he intended to.)”
Negative Commands (Prohibitions)
Using 'недей' or 'не' with the Imperfective to tell someone not to do something.

Ask yourself: Did I not even start (Imperfective) or did I just not finish (Perfective)?
Always pair it with an Imperfective verb. It's a 100% rule.
Use 'Недей да' + Imperfective for a softer, more natural 'Don't'.
Use the Perfective 'Не намерих'. Finding is a result, not a process.
