تا حالا برات سوال شده چرا وقتی هدفون جدیدت خیلی خفنه نمی‌تونی بگی gooder؟ انگار یه بچه کوچولو داره حرف می‌زنه، مگه نه؟ زبان انگلیسی عاشق قانون و قاعده‌ست، اما بیشتر از اون عاشقِ شکستنِ اوناست.
بیشتر صفت‌ها از الگوی ساده‌ی -er یا more پیروی می‌کنن. کلمه‌ی tall رو برمی‌داری و می‌کنی taller. کلمه‌ی expensive رو برمی‌داری و می‌کنی more expensive.
ساده‌ست. اما بعدش سر و کله‌ی شورشی‌ها پیدا می‌شه. اینا صفت‌های تفضیلی بی‌قاعده (irregular comparatives) هستن.
اینا همرنگ جماعت نمی‌شن. کل هویتشون رو عوض می‌کنن فقط برای اینکه تو رو به چالش بکشن. مثل تکامل پوکمون (Pokémon evolution) بهشون فکر کن.
Good فقط یه کلاه سرش نمی‌ذاره؛ تکامل پیدا می‌کنه و می‌شه better. Bad فقط یه حرف اضافه نمی‌گیره؛ تبدیل می‌شه به worse.
یاد گرفتن همین چندتا کلمه مثل گرفتن یه کارت VIP برای طبیعی حرف زدنه. اگه تو یه مصاحبه شغلی یا سر قرار تیندر بگی gooder یا badder، ممکنه چپ‌چپ نگاهت کنن. این کلمات جزو پرکاربردترین کلمات کل زبان انگلیسی هستن.
ازشون استفاده می‌کنی تا فیلم‌های نتفلیکس رو نقد کنی. استفاده می‌کنی تا از سرعت وای‌فای شکایت کنی. حتی استفاده می‌کنی تا تصمیم بگیری کدوم اوبر (Uber) ارزون‌تره.
چون خیلی رایج هستن، تصمیم گرفتن که برای قوانین معمولی زیادی باحالن. امروز قراره اصلی‌هاشون رو بررسی کنیم: good، bad، far، little و much/many. مسلط شدن به اینا باعث می‌شه انگلیسیت درجا ۱۰ برابر شیک‌تر و تمیزتر بشه.
به علاوه، بالاخره دیگه شبیه یه شخصیت کارتونی که داره سعی می‌کنه برای اولین بار حرف بزنه، به نظر نمیای. یه گروه کوچیک از کلماتن ولی تاثیر وحشتناکی روی روونی کلامت دارن.

این گرامر چطور کار می‌کنه

وقتی دو تا چیز رو مقایسه می‌کنیم، معمولاً یه تفاوت توی کیفیت یا کمیت رو نشون میدیم. معمولاً به کلمات کوتاه -er اضافه می‌کنیم (fast ← faster). به کلمات بلند more اضافه می‌کنیم (beautiful ← more beautiful).
اما صفت‌های بی‌قاعده کلاً این قضیه رو نادیده می‌گیرن. اونا فرم‌های مقایسه‌ای خاص خودشون رو دارن که فقط باید حفظشون کنی. هیچ منطق یا فرمول سری‌ای اینجا وجود نداره.
فقط تاریخه که یکم بهم ریخته‌ست و شلوغ‌کاری کرده.
مثلاً، اگه داری دو تا پیتزافروشی رو مقایسه می‌کنی، نمیگی یکیشون more good هست. میگی better هست. اگه عمر باتری گوشی قدیمیت بد بوده، اما جدیدیه حتی مشکل‌سازتره، میگی این worse هست. کلاً کلمه عوض می‌شه. معنی اصلی همونه، اما شکل کلمه کاملاً تغییر می‌کنه.
ما همیشه اینا رو با کلمه‌ی than استفاده می‌کنیم وقتی اسم هر دو چیزی که مقایسه می‌شن رو میاریم.

(این قهوه better از اونیه که دیروز خوردم). اگه از متن معلوم باشه، می‌تونی than رو حذف کنی.

(فکر می‌کردم فیلم اول خوب بود، ولی دنباله‌ش better هست). این کلمات رو همه جای شبکه‌های اجتماعی می‌بینی. مردم همیشه دارن بحث می‌کنن که کی گیمر better (بهتری) هست یا کدوم سریال پایان worse (بدتری) داره.
این نون و پنیرِ مکالمات روزمره‌ست. فقط یادت باشه: نه -er، نه more. فقط از فرم خاصش استفاده کن.

اشتباهات رایج

بزرگترین تله «تفضیلی مضاعف» (Double Comparative) هست. این وقتیه که سعی می‌کنی زیادی کمک کنی و به کلمه‌ای که خودش بی‌قاعده‌ست، more یا -er اضافه کنی.

گفتنِ more better مثل اینه که دو تا عینک آفتابی رو هم بزنی. چیزی رو شفاف‌تر نمی‌کنه؛ فقط مسخره به نظر میاد.
یکی دیگه هم badder هست. توی بعضی متون اسلنگ (مثل متن آهنگ‌ها)، ممکنه بشنوی که از badder به معنی «خفن‌تر» یا «باحال‌تر» استفاده می‌شه، اما توی انگلیسی استاندارد، همیشه worse هست. اگه ماشینت خراب شده، وضعیتش worse از دیروزه، نه badder.
قاطی کردن farther و further حتی برای انگلیسی‌زبان‌های بومی هم رایجه. یه ترفند خوب: farther توش کلمه‌ی far رو داره، که مربوط به فاصله فیزیکیه که می‌تونی با خط‌کش اندازه بگیری. کلمه‌ی Then برای زمانه (اول این، then (بعدش) اون). Than برای مقایسه‌ست. اگه اینو اشتباه بگی، پلیسِ گرامر دستگیرت نمی‌کنه، ولی یه غلط نوشتاری خیلی رایجه که اصلاحش آسونه.

مقایسه با الگوهای مشابه

اینا چه فرقی با صفت‌های تفضیلی باقاعده دارن؟ خب، معمولی‌ها قابل پیش‌بینی‌ان. اگه small رو ببینی، می‌دونی می‌شه smaller. اگه beautiful رو ببینی، می‌دونی می‌شه more beautiful. بی‌قاعده‌ها غیرقابل پیش‌بینی‌ان (wildcards). اونا کل ریشه‌ی کلمه رو عوض می‌کنن.
یه تفاوت دیگه هم با صفت‌های عالی (Superlatives) هست. اینا رو با هم قاطی نکن! صفت‌های تفضیلی (Comparatives) دو تا چیز رو مقایسه می‌کنن. صفت‌های عالی سه تا چیز یا بیشتر (یا یکی رو با کل گروه) مقایسه می‌کنن.

اینجا، ما از کلمه‌ی پایه (good) استفاده می‌کنیم، نه فرم تفضیلی بی‌قاعده (better).
فقط وقتی از فرم بی‌قاعده استفاده کن که تفاوتی وجود داشته باشه! اگه مثل همن، برگرد به صفت ساده. انگار دکمه‌ی ریست رو زدی.
