§ 'Ammatti' vs. 'Työ'

Many Finnish learners confuse 'ammatti' with 'työ'. It's an easy mistake to make because in English, 'job' and 'profession' can sometimes be used interchangeably. However, in Finnish, there's a clear difference.

DEFINITION
Ammatti: This refers to your chosen field of work, your career, or what you've been trained to do. It's a general description of your expertise, regardless of whether you're currently employed.
DEFINITION
Työ: This means 'work' or 'a job'. It refers to the specific position or task you are doing. You can have many 'työ' (jobs) within the same 'ammatti' (profession).

Mikä sinun ammattisi on?

  • What is your profession? (Asking about your career field)

Minulla on uusi työ.

  • I have a new job. (Referring to a specific employment position)

§ Using 'ammatti' in questions

When asking someone about their profession, a common mistake is to directly translate English phrases. The standard way to ask 'What is your profession?' in Finnish is not a direct word-for-word translation.

Mikä sinun ammattisi on?

  • What is your profession? (Correct and natural way to ask)

Avoid phrases like *"Mitä sinä olet ammatti?"* (a literal translation of "What are you profession?"), as this sounds very unnatural and incorrect in Finnish. The possessive suffix '-si' (your) attached to 'ammatti' is crucial here.

§ Plural 'ammatit'

While 'ammatti' is singular, its plural form 'ammatit' (professions) is used correctly when referring to multiple professions. However, sometimes learners might use it where the singular would be more appropriate or in contexts where Finnish would prefer a different structure.

Suomessa on monia erilaisia ammatteja.

  • In Finland, there are many different professions. (Correct use of partitive plural)

The key is to understand when to use the singular for a general profession and when the plural is truly necessary to indicate multiple distinct professions. Most often, when talking about 'your profession' or 'my profession', you'll use the singular 'ammatti' with the correct case and possessive suffix.

§ Case endings with 'ammatti'

Finnish has many case endings, and 'ammatti' is no exception. Incorrectly applying case endings can change the meaning or make your sentence grammatically incorrect. Pay attention to how 'ammatti' changes.

  • Nominative: ammatti (the profession)
  • Partitive: ammattia (a profession, some profession - often used in questions or with certain verbs)
  • Genitive: ammatin (of the profession)
  • Inessive: ammatissa (in the profession)
  • Elative: ammatista (from the profession)
  • Illative: ammattiin (into the profession)

Hän on hyvä ammatissaan.

  • He/She is good in their profession. (Using inessive case with possessive suffix)

نکات

Basic use of 'ammatti'

The most common way to ask about someone's profession is 'Mikä sinun ammatti on?' which means 'What is your profession?'

Answering with 'ammatti'

To answer, you can say 'Minun ammattini on [profession].' For example, 'Minun ammattini on opettaja.' (My profession is a teacher.)

Don't confuse with 'työ'

While 'ammatti' refers to a specific, learned profession or trade, 'työ' is a more general term for 'work' or 'job'. You might say 'Minulla on paljon työtä' (I have a lot of work), but not 'Minulla on paljon ammattia'.

Directness in Finnish

Finns tend to be direct. Asking 'Mikä sinun ammatti on?' is perfectly natural and not considered rude. It's a common way to get to know someone.

Occupational titles are often nouns

Many Finnish professional titles are simple nouns. For example, 'lääkäri' (doctor), 'insinööri' (engineer), 'opiskelija' (student). You can combine them with 'ammatti' if you want to emphasize the profession itself.

Possessive suffix with 'ammatti'

Notice the possessive suffix '-ni' in 'ammattini' (my profession). This is common in Finnish. 'Minun ammattini' literally means 'My profession-my'.

Formal vs. informal asking about profession

For a more formal setting, especially with someone older or in a position of authority, you might use 'Mikä teidän ammattinne on?' (What is your profession? - formal 'you').

Using 'olla' (to be) with 'ammatti'

You can also simply state your profession directly using the verb 'olla' (to be). For example, 'Olen opettaja.' (I am a teacher.) This is often more common in casual conversation than using 'ammatti'.

Plural of 'ammatti'

The plural form of 'ammatti' is 'ammattit'. For example, 'Heillä on erilaisia ammattija.' (They have different professions.) Note the partitive plural 'ammattija'.

Avoid direct translation pitfalls

Don't try to directly translate English phrases like 'I work as a...' Instead, use Finnish structures like 'Olen [profession]' (I am a [profession]) or 'Minun ammattini on [profession]'.

Hänen ___ vie hänet usein ulkomaille konferensseihin ja seminaareihin.

درسته! نه دقیقاً. پاسخ صحیح: ammattinsa

Context refers to travel for work-related events like conferences and seminars, which aligns with 'ammattinsa' (his/her profession). 'Harrastuksensa' (his/her hobby) and 'perheensä' (his/her family) wouldn't typically necessitate such travel in a professional context. 'Matkansa' (his/her journey) is too general and doesn't specify the reason for travel as clearly as 'ammattinsa'.

fill blank C1

Vaikka työ oli vaativaa, hän tunsi syvää tyytyväisyyttä valitsemaansa ___.

درسته! نه دقیقاً. پاسخ صحیح: ammattiin

The sentence speaks of feeling satisfaction with a chosen 'calling' or 'path' despite the work being demanding. 'Ammattiin' (profession) fits this perfectly, implying a career choice that brings fulfillment. 'Kutsumukseen' (calling) is close but 'ammattiin' directly relates to the work itself. 'Suuntaan' (direction) and 'tiehen' (path) are too abstract without the explicit professional context.

fill blank C1

Hän on omistautunut ___ ja pyrkii aina kehittämään taitojaan.

درسته! نه دقیقاً. پاسخ صحیح: ammattiinsa

The sentence states that 'he/she is dedicated to...' and 'always strives to develop his/her skills'. This clearly points to a dedication to one's profession, hence 'ammattiinsa' (to his/her profession). While 'työlleen' (to his/her work) is similar, 'ammattiinsa' emphasizes the broader career field and lifelong dedication. 'Itselleen' (to himself/herself) and 'perheelleen' (to his/her family) do not fit the context of skill development.

fill blank C1

Nykymaailmassa on tärkeää pysyä ajan tasalla oman ___ vaatimusten kanssa.

درسته! نه دقیقاً. پاسخ صحیح: ammattinsa

The context implies the need to stay updated with the demands of one's career field. 'Ammattinsa' (one's profession) is the most fitting choice. 'Elämänsä' (one's life) is too broad. 'Aikansa' (one's time) and 'tilanteensa' (one's situation) do not specifically refer to professional requirements.

fill blank C1

Hän on tunnettu asiantuntija omalla ___ ja häntä konsultoidaan usein vaikeissa tapauksissa.

درسته! نه دقیقاً. پاسخ صحیح: ammattikunnassaan

The sentence describes someone as a renowned expert who is often consulted in difficult cases within their field. 'Ammattikunnassaan' (in his/her professional community/profession) best conveys this sense of being an expert within a specific profession or professional group. 'Alallaan' (in his/her field) is also plausible but 'ammattikunnassaan' is more specific about the professional sphere of influence. 'Paikallaan' (in his/her place) and 'ympyröissään' (in his/her circles) are less precise.

fill blank C1

Nuoret pohtivat usein, mikä ___ sopisi heidän kiinnostuksen kohteisiinsa ja vahvuuksiinsa.

درسته! نه دقیقاً. پاسخ صحیح: ammatti

The sentence talks about young people considering which 'career' or 'profession' would match their interests and strengths. 'Ammatti' (profession) is the most appropriate word for a long-term career choice. 'Työ' (work) is more general. 'Tehtävä' (task/assignment) is too specific. 'Kutsu' (calling) is a strong word, but 'ammatti' is a more common and practical term when discussing career choices.
