The French adjective submergé (pronounced: soob-mer-ZHAY) is a versatile word, much like its English equivalent 'overwhelmed'. It describes a state of being completely inundated, either literally by water or, more commonly, figuratively by emotions, tasks, or problems. While it technically means 'submerged', in everyday French, it's most often used to express feeling overwhelmed or swamped.

It's a CEFR B1 level word, which means it's good to know if you're moving past the basics. You'll hear it in casual conversations, news reports, and even in more formal settings when people are describing a difficult situation.

• Submergé par: This generally refers to the cause of the overwhelming feeling.
• Submergé de: This can also refer to the cause, especially when talking about a large quantity of something.

Submergé isn't just for feelings. It can also describe a situation where something is literally or metaphorically swamped.

In this case, the literal meaning of 'submerged' comes through more clearly. But even here, it implies an overwhelming situation for the city.

Formal vs. Informal

While submergé is perfectly acceptable in most contexts, you might hear other, more informal expressions for being overwhelmed, such as débordé (swamped, literally 'overflowing'). However, submergé often carries a stronger sense of being completely overtaken.
