Using this phrase is like building a small Lego set. First, you identify who or what you are waiting for. In Hindi, you use the postposition का (ka) to connect the object to the wait. For example, if you wait for Rahul, you say राहुल का इंतजार करना (Rahul ka intazaar karna). If you wait for the bus, it's बस का इंतजार करना. Notice how the का changes based on gender? If you wait for a girl, it stays का because इंतजार is a masculine noun. This trips up many people! The verb करना changes based on the tense. For present tense, you say करता हूँ (karta hoon). For past tense, you use किया (kiya). In the past, you must use the ने (ne) particle with the subject. For example: मैंने तुम्हारा इंतजार किया (I waited for you). It sounds complicated, but it becomes second nature quickly. Think of it as 'I did your wait.'

Imagine you are at a crowded airport. You see a sign that says कृपया अपनी बारी का इंतजार करें (Please wait for your turn). This is the formal side of the phrase. Now, shift to a WhatsApp chat. You see a message: मैं १० मिनट से तुम्हारा इंतजार कर रहा हूँ! (I have been waiting for you for 10 minutes!). The exclamation mark tells you your friend is getting annoyed. In a job interview, the HR might say, हमारे कॉल का इंतजार कीजिए (Please wait for our call). This is the professional, slightly vague version. You might even use it in a romantic Instagram caption. लंबे इंतजार के बाद... (After a long wait...). It works for everything from pizza delivery to life-changing news. If you are waiting for an Uber, you might tell the driver, मैं बाहर आपका इंतजार कर रहा हूँ (I am waiting for you outside).

You should use इंतजार करना whenever there is an expectation involved. Use it when there is a specific person, object, or event you are looking for. It is perfect for time-based scenarios. Use it when you are standing at a train station. Use it when you are waiting for a salary credit notification. Use it when you are waiting for your favorite YouTuber to drop a new video. It is the 'gold standard' for waiting. If you want to sound natural and idiomatic, this is your go-to phrase. It works in 99% of situations where the English word 'wait' applies. Do not use इंतजार करना if you just mean to physically stop or stay in a place. For that, use रुकना (rukna). If a traffic light turns red, the cars रुकते हैं (stop/stay), they don't necessarily 'do wait' in the grammatical sense. Also, avoid using it when you mean 'to serve' as in a 'waiter' serving a table. That is a completely different concept in Hindi. Don't use it if you are telling someone to 'hold on' for a second during a conversation. In that case, एक मिनट (one minute) or रुकिए (wait/stop) is better. Using इंतजार करना for a two-second pause sounds way too dramatic. It would be like saying 'I shall commence my vigil for your next sentence.' A bit much for a casual chat!

You can add adverbs to change the vibe. बेसब्री से इंतजार करना (besabri se intazaar karna) means to wait impatiently or eagerly. This is great for when a new season of your favorite show is about to drop. You can also say थोड़ा इंतजार करना (thoda intazaar karna) for a short wait. If you are frustrated, you might say कब तक इंतजार करना पड़ेगा? (How long will I have to wait?). In text slang, people sometimes just write Wait kar raha hoon using the English word. But stick to the Hindi version to impress the locals. It shows you actually care about the language! Plus, इंतजार just sounds more soulful than 'wait.'

Is it formal or informal? It is perfectly neutral. You can use it with your boss or your cat. Does the gender of the person waiting matter? Only for the verb at the end (करता हूँ vs करती हूँ). The word इंतजार itself stays masculine. Can I use it for objects? Yes! You can wait for a letter, a parcel, or even the rain. Why is there a z sound?
